Developer looking for tenants

A Facebook post Tuesday morning about a grocery store locating on the site of the old Williston High School set Williston abuzz with the thought of new development.

The post showed a drawing of the property on West Noble Avenue, along with a caption detailing the store as well as other retail stores destined for the property.

The post also mentioned a Wawa convenience store is slated to be built at "the top of the hill", across from Green Shutters.

Dixie scallop season opens...

The 2019 recreational bay scallop season for Dixie County and a portion of Taylor County opens June 15 and will remain open through Sept. 10. This includes all state waters from the Suwannee River to the Fenholloway River.

Additional bay scallop season dates for 2019 are as follows:

• St. Joseph Bay/Gulf County: Aug. 16 through Sept. 15. This region includes all state waters from the Mexico Beach Canal in Bay County to the westernmost point of St. Vincent Island in Franklin County.

The city of Williston opened its doors Saturday to show off its new municipal building and celebrate the 90th anniversary of its incorportaion. Additionally, the Williston Pioneer tagged along to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the founding of its forebear, The Levy County Times. Mayor Emeritus R. Gerald Hethcoat and Councilman Elihu Ross were on hand to share the history of Williston with visitors.  Don McCormick, also a historian, checks out the charter for the Williston Area Chamber of Commerce, located in city hall.

Coming off the heels of the recent Ranch Rodeo event in May, Levy County Commissioner Mike Joyner proposed an effort that would raise a roof over the main arena of Williston Horseman’s Park.

The multipurpose facility located just south of Williston on NW 19th Avenue was established in 1993 by the Williston’s Horseman’s Association (WHA) and is rented out for events including rodeos, equine events, dog shows, and car shows.

Williston: A happening place

Projects in Williston are so diversified it took city staff more than an hour to bring council members up to date at Tuesday night's meeting.

City Planner Jackie Gorman, on staff for a little over six months, said she has been researching old projects and bringing them back to the forefront for the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA).

In addition to determine what direction Block 12, the parking area behind Main Street, is going, the CRA is also working on signage for the district's businesses and completing improvements in Heritage Park.

Bidders show up ready to buy

Some bidders were looking for a new place to live or land to farm, others needed a spot to park equipment trailers on, and one person needed a lot to build a spec home on.

Many reasons brought a crowd of about 75 people to the Levy County Courthouse on June 17 for the first escheated property auction held since 2015.

Legal Assistant Susan P. Haines served as the auctioneer, and was very happy with the outcome.

School Board Chair: No more...

An audience member went to the podium at the June 11 Levy County School Board meeting and stated that she had three questions about a recent hiring process.

After the first question, Attorney David M. Delaney advised the board to not respond to the questions and said, “This is a public comment period. Sometimes members of the public or the media can be directed to individuals within the district who can look into a question and get back to them. But the board is not expected to have answers on the spot.

Publix in Williston? Maybe.

A Facebook post Tuesday morning about Publix locating on the site of the old Williston High School set Williston abuzz with the thought of new development.

The post, by Larry Wininger, husband of Williston City Council President Nancy Wininger, showed a drawing of the property on West Noble Avenue, along with a caption detailing that Publix as well as other retail stores were destined for the property.

The drawing bears the words, "Publix Plyon Sign – 10 ' Minimum Setback" on it.

Superintendent of Levy County Schools Jeffrey Edison announced at the June 11 school board meeting that, “It’s that time of year when the board names a legislative representative.”

Board Member Paige Brookins nominated board member Chris Cowart to serve as the Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) liaison and for School Board Chair Brad Etheridge to serve as the alternate for the 2019-2020 school year.
