  • Become a Master Gardener

    Novice and experienced gardeners have an opportunity to hone gardening skills, share personal experience and meet folks of similar interest through the Florida Master Gardener program.  Classes for 2012 Florida Master Gardener training will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 7 and will meet each Tuesday for eight consecutive weeks from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Levy Agricultural Center in Bronson, 625 North Hathaway Avenue, Alt. 27.

  • Sheriff’s race off to fast start

    Levy County Sheriff Johnny Smith is not on the 2012 ballot seeking re-election, but that did not stop his rival in the 2008 election who is a candidate in the 2012 Republican primary from criticizing his performance.
    Bobby McCallum, of Chiefland, one of two candidates for the Republican nomination for sheriff in the Aug. 14, 2012 primary, told the Chiefland Rotary Club Smith has been an “absentee sheriff.” and Sheriff’s Office employees have told him they are embarrassed to work there and he pledged to return the office’s honor.

  • Two-hour standoff ends peaceably Dec. 24

    A Williston man who told deputies he was distraught because he didn’t have a job, money or food, barricaded himself in his home Christmas Eve.
    The man was armed with a pump .22 rifle, according to the sheriff’s report.
    After a two-hour stand off, deputies were able to negotiate him out of the residence.  The man was Baker-acted and transported to Gainesville to the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU), which helps patients with mental health issues.

    Dec. 25, Thomas Joseph Carlisle, 19, Bronson, battery on officer, firefighter or EMT.
    Dec. 22, Jeremy Lamar Clemons, 18, Trenton, disorderly intoxication in a public place causing a disturbance, obstruction w/o violence. Bond $5,500.
    Dec. 24, Tami Lynn Cox, 38, Williston, battery.
    Dec. 25, Christopher Lee Glisson, 37, Chiefland, two counts assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.
    Dec. 22, Amanda Nichole Lee, 28, Old Town, petit theft. Bond $500.

  • Williston PD looking for accident witnesses
  • Police looking for accident witnesses

    The Williston Police Department is looking for anyone who may have witnessed an accident Monday, Dec. 26 around 11:50 a.m. at the intersection of Hwys. 41 and 121, near the Chevron gas station.
    The vehicles involved were a blue Chrysler van and a gray 2011 Nissan.
    If you saw this accident, please contact Investigator James Bond at 561-436-5155 as soon as possible.

  • To my sister with love at Christmastime

    While hundreds of people flock to the card section of a store and pore over the dozens of cards to send to loved ones for Christmas, Joyce Vickers is sitting with her feet propped up enjoying the stillness.
    She doesn’t have to fight the crowds. She doesn’t have to read countless cards. She doesn’t have to spend a lot of money.
    That’s because for the last 38 years, she and her sister, Gail Brower, have exchanged the same Christmas card–year in and year out.
    She doesn’t know what really prompted it.

  • Candy Barber dished it out in 40 years

    When Candy Barber started working as a substitute in the  Chiefland schools lunchroom she only wanted to have a job that allowed her to be home with her children, Royce and Janet, when they were not in school.
    On Jan. 4 Barber, who estimates she has served or overseen the serving of over 5 million meals, will retire from her post as coordinator of food service for the county’s 13 schools. She is also president of the Florida School Nutrition Association.

    Dec. 13, Cody Wayne Andrews, 19, Williston, dealing in stolen property and grand theft. Bond $13,500.
    Dec. 14, Joey Berry, 23, Trenton, out of county warrant. Bond $5,000.
    Dec. 16–James Macolm Bonner, 43, Reddick, FTA, four counts obtaining goods/services. Bond $20,000.
    Dec. 18, Eric Alan Booth, 50, Cedar Key, DUI. Bond $2,500.
