  • Frank Etheridge retires

     Drummond Community Bank bid farewell to long-time banker and friend, Frank Etheridge when he retired Dec. 31 after 43 years of banking.

    Among his many accomplishments, Etheridge led Perkins State Bank as president, CEO and Chair of the Board. 

  • County delays legal ad decision

    The Chiefland Citizen and an online blogger must wait another two weeks to find out if the Levy County Commission will be awarding the county’s legal advertising and delinquent tax roll publication. 

    The commissioners decided to table the matter for further study after Interim County Coordinator Wilbur Dean said only two bids were received. The one for the blogger offers to add a page to his website and keep it available all year for $5,000. 

  • Boys struggle, girls thrive in last week's hoops action

    It was another eventful week for the Williston High basketball teams last week. The girls won both of their games (vs. Hawthorne, at Ft. White), managing to turn in another impressive week of wins. 

    The boys, meanwhile, went 1-2, with their lone win coming at Ft. White, and their losses being at home versus Hawthorne, and at North Marion. 

    The girls played their first game of the week last Dec. 13 at home against Hawthorne. 

  • Edison takes helm as superintendent

    The new superintendent of Levy County schools and three Levy County School Board members were sworn in by Judge James “Tim” Browning earlier this month in Bronson, officially ushering in a new era of leadership for the Levy school system.

    Jeff Edison assumed the helm as superintendent after serving as assistant superintendent under Robert “Bob” Hastings, who served eight years at the position, and did not seek a third term.

  • Williston man found dead in lime rock pit

    The body of a Williston man who went missing Dec. 11 was found two days later in a lime rock pit off SR 121.

    Ronald Gregory Wesley, 61, went fishing before noon Dec. 11. His family said he did not return. Deputies found his vehicle near a gate adjacent to private property and near the rock pit.

  • Montbrook mine hearing is Feb. 21

    A special exception permit for a proposed limerock mine in Montbrook that the Levy County Planning Commission recommended be denied will get a hearing from the Levy County Commission on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. 

    This is the second time a mine has been proposed on the same site. Seven years ago the planning board recommended a similar permit be declined after residents protested and the appeal to the county commission died before being heard. 

  • Councilman Danny Etheridge resigns

    Citing a move to give his little girl more room to run and a pond for fishing, Williston Councilman Danny Etheridge announced his resignation Tuesday night effective Jan. 11, 2017.

    Etheridge, who was elected unopposed in 2015 to the post, said his family will move to Morriston. He said it had been an honor and privilege to serve on the council and he would try to stay involved in city matters as much as possible.
