    Democratic Party Meeting

    The next meeting of the Levy County Democratic Party will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17, beginning at 3:30 p.m., at the Bronson Public Library, located at 600 Gilbert St. in Bronson (Alt. 27, across the street from Save-A-Lot). Light refreshments will be served.

    Democratic Women Meeting

    Democratic Women’s Club of Levy County has a new meeting day and time. The new meeting date is Sunday, Aug. 11 at 4 p.m. in the Bronson Library, 600 Gilbert St., Bronson. Light refreshments will be served.

    • Aug. 4, Janis Dee Andersen, 50, Ocala, criminal mischief. Bond $2,500.

    • Aug. 1, Paula Merie Bornschein, 51, Port Orange, out of county warrant.

    • July 31, Andrew James Brown, 40, Gainesville, domestic battery by strangulation. Bond $150,000.

    • Aug. 2, Frederick Carpenter, 52, Chiefland, two counts sex offender violation/failure to report vacating permanent residence. Bond $150,000.

  • Low-cost spay, neuter clinic Saturday

     Levy Animal Friends (LeAF) and Sheltering Hands (SH) are partnering to bring The Kitty Kontrol Project to Williston.

    This project will offer low-cost spay & neuter services for homeless cats. Cat colony overpopulation is best addressed when communities combine their efforts and resources to magnify positive results. The goal of the new project is to spay and neuter 1,000 homeless cats and to assist low-income, seniors and veterans with spay and neuter services.

  • From the mailbag – a 21st century version

    Many years ago at one of the first newspapers I worked for, I was not permitted to write a personal column like this. That privilege was only for the publisher and editor. Reporters were never even considered to write columns. Ever.

    Weeks when the editor had nothing profound to say, and neither did the publisher, the latter wrote a 19-inch piece of drivel about odd things he received in the mail.

    Back in those days, email was just on the cusp and PR folks sent dozens of press releases daily, hoping to catch free space in the newspaper.

    July 25, Vivian Lorraine Bailey, 39, Cross City, fraud/insufficient funds. Bond $15,000.

    July 22, Jonathon Edward Barfield, 33, Williston, failure to register as a convicted felon, possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance w/o a prescription, possession and/or use of drug equipment. Bond $66,000.

    July 26, Julio Collazo, 39, Inglis, out of county warrant. Bond $840.

    Back to School Jamboree

    We Soar Inc., along with other community sponsors, will host the 25th Annual Back to School Jamboree Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Williston Elementary School Cafetorium starting at 2 p.m.

    There will be free backpacks filled with school supplies (from PreK up to college), door prizes, games and activities, the WE SOAR Drumline and youth dance team, other giveaways and food.

    Special guest will be WHS alumnus Timothy Donald Jr. This event will offer something for the whole family to enjoy.
