Levy County children who do not participate in athletic leagues but join in recreation programs will be the beneficiaries of a change in the county’s recreation funds policy.

The County Board of County Commissioners approved the policy change to allow the $60,000 annual budget — $12,000 per commissioner, to be spent on more than athletic activities by a 3-1 vote. Commission Chair Nancy Bell cast the dissenting vote. Commissioner Marsha Drew, who initiated discussion several months ago to change the policy, was absent from Tuesday’s meeting due to illness.

All people from India are not snake charmers nor do they ride magic carpets or use elephants as their main form of transportation.

That was the humorous finale of a presentation made Tuesday to Williston Rotary Club by the Group Study Exchange from Andrahra Pradesh, India.

The five-member group, consisting of a dancer, a scientist, a tourism coordinator and two businessmen, is part of a Rotary exchange where Rotarians learn about other places and cultures.

Williston Police Department reports the following arrests:

• Curtis Callen Smith, 60, of Newberry was charged April 19 with retail theft when he allegedly took items from Hitchcock’s.

• Michael A. Washington, 28, of Archer was arrested for leaving the scene of a traffic crash and driving with a suspended license April 24.

Arrested on outstanding warrants were: Alfred James Irving, 20, of Gainesville; Jeremiah Sampson, 18, of Williston; Tina Marie Watson, 27, of Williston and Stephani Soraci, 34, of Layfaette.

The Williston Lady Devils had built a 4-0 lead through five innings against a stubborn Crystal River Lady Pirates team.

The Lady Pirates scored their lone run in the top of the sixth inning on a wild pitch, starting a rally. But they would have to finish the rally in the last inning as another excellent defensive play this time by second baseman Kayla Thorrington ended the inning.
