  • Staying one step ahead of chaos

    In the weekly newspaper business there are certain times of the year reporters and editors dread more than others. The end of the school year is such a time.

    There are so many activities going on simultaneously, especially in smaller towns with multiple schools, that even when newspapers had larger staffs, it was difficult to keep up with everything.

    Imagine what I go through here in Williston.

    Tammy Jones, Levy County Supervisor of Elections, was sworn in as President Elect of the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections by Secretary of State Ken Detzner during the association's conference in May in Fort Lauderdale.

    Peanut Festival Applications

    The Williston Area Chamber of Commerce is now accepting vendor applications for the 31st Annual Central Florida Peanut Festival, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 5 in Williston's Heritage Park.

    Vendors this year will choose their own spaces, so early application is suggested.

  • Chris Cowart named legislative liaison

    Superintendent of Levy County Schools Jeffrey Edison announced at the June 11 school board meeting that, “It’s that time of year when the board names a legislative representative.”

    Board Member Paige Brookins nominated board member Chris Cowart to serve as the Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) liaison and for School Board Chair Brad Etheridge to serve as the alternate for the 2019-2020 school year.

  • Bidders show up ready to buy

    Some bidders were looking for a new place to live or land to farm, others needed a spot to park equipment trailers on, and one person needed a lot to build a spec home on.

    Many reasons brought a crowd of about 75 people to the Levy County Courthouse on June 17 for the first escheated property auction held since 2015.

    Legal Assistant Susan P. Haines served as the auctioneer, and was very happy with the outcome.

  • Williston: A happening place

    Projects in Williston are so diversified it took city staff more than an hour to bring council members up to date at Tuesday night's meeting.

    City Planner Jackie Gorman, on staff for a little over six months, said she has been researching old projects and bringing them back to the forefront for the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA).

    In addition to determine what direction Block 12, the parking area behind Main Street, is going, the CRA is also working on signage for the district's businesses and completing improvements in Heritage Park.

  • Sirius Pizza celebrates grand opening

    Sirius Pizza held its grand opening last week and celebrated with a ribbon cutting as a new member of the Williston Area Chamber of Commerce. The new restaurant, owned and managed by David Coffin and his wife, Kristen, daughter of  former King Munchie himself Bobby Brown, is located at 110 NE 6th Ave., Williston, Sirius Pizza also serves sandwiches, pastas and desserts. It is open 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. every day but Sunday. "Our goal is to serve serious food and to help give back to the community," said Kristen.
