The game started and continued Thursday evening Jan. 27, for the Santa Fe Raiders as the CJ Wakeley and Ashton Lee show.
But the end result was a Williston team effort that lifted the Red Devils to a smashing 82-63 district win.
Wakeley’s 27 points and Lee’s 23 points accounted for all but 13 points for the Raiders on the night.
The Red Devils on the other hand were putting 4 players in double figures and crashing the boards, while dropping in 3-point baskets the entire game at key times.
The Red Devils led the game at every stop, despite a slow start finding themselves down 7-0 as the game started.
Three point baskets by Paul King, James Monroe, and Jacques Edwards quickly put the Red Devils ahead for good as the first quarter ended.
The Red Devils held a 40-33 half time lead over the Raiders as the threes kept falling for the Red Devils from the outside and Tre Wilson took charge under the basket for the Red Devils.
Building their lead to 59-46 at the end of the third quarter the Red Devils added a big 23 point fourth quarter to take the win 82-63.
King ended the game with 19 points, while Wilson had 17 points. Monroe dropped in 14 points and Edwards ended the game with 13 points.
Following the Red Devils 51-49 loss to the Raiders at Santa Fe back on Jan. 7, Head Coach Steve Faulkner told his team following the game, “We have done all we can do, and I expect it will come down to a coin toss to see which school gets to host the district playoffs.
“We played them tough tonight,” Faulkner said, “but this is just Round 2, and I fully expect we will be playing them two more times this season before one of us are done.”
The district tournament is Feb. 8-12 at either Williston High School or Santa Fe High School, according to Faulkner.
In earlier game action Brandon Preston (19 points and Tyus Williams ( 16 points) led the Red Devil JV in a second half come back only to fall to the Raider JV team 60-59 on two missed Red Devil free throws with 2.7 seconds showing on the clock. The JV teams went to overtime the last time the two teams met with the Raider JV team getting that win also.
