The Williston Red Devil Varsity Football team finally seems to have hit its stride. After winning its homecoming game against Taylor County, the Red Devils traveled to Union County, last Friday and beat the Tigers by a score of 42-14. The Devils played great, with both the offense and defense putting on a show.

The offense, which has struggled at times this year, was very impressive. The Devils came right out of the gates, feeding senior runner Gerard Williams III (#21) two carries on its opening drive, with Williams III scoring on the second. The offense didn’t slow down from there though. Junior quarterback CJ Strange (#5) threw three touchdowns(two in the first half, one in the second) one to Williams III and two to sophomore receiver Jeremiah James (#1). The Devils went into the half up 35-7, and only had to score once after halftime as they let their defense do the heavy lifting.

While the offense was very good, the defense was downright dominant. While Union County senior running back Charles Strong (#2) did have a monstrous game(27 carries, 208 yards, one touchdown), he was kept out of the endzone, which was the main concern for the Devils going into the game. Union County was also put behind the sticks often, forcing them to pass.

This killed the Tigers however, as Williston had three interceptions. Three different players came down with one: senior safety Cameron Oliver (#4), junior cornerback Quinyon Mitchell (#14) and junior cornerback Tay Lee (#6). Oliver and Mitchell returned both of theirs for touchdowns, adding to the beatdown the offense was already putting on the Tigers.

The win brings the Devils' record to 4-4 on the year, with two games left to be played in the regular season. The team’s next game will be at home against the Dixie County Bears (9-0). If the Devils can win out from here, they have a chance at making it to the state playoffs for the first time in eight years. But the game against the undefeated Bears will be a tough one.

The Bears are led by a trio of high octane rushers. Seniors Aaron Dawson( #1) and James Smith (#6), and junior Carlos Williams Jr. (#7) have rushed for 561, 554, and 679 yards, respectively. Each also has at least five touchdowns on the year, with Williams Jr. having 11. They don’t pass very often, so the Devils will be able to key on the run, but it will definitely be a challenge to stop the group of rushers the Bears deploy.

On defense, the Bears are a group of playmakers. They have 12 interceptions to go along with 21 sacks on the year, and they will look to rush Strange into some bad decisions in hopes of forcing a turnover. The Devil offense will need to carry its momentum from last Friday into this game if they want to come out with a win.

The game will be played tomorrow night at 7:30, at Booster Stadium. Come out and support the team!
