The Williston Lady Red Devil were forced to go the distance on their Senior Night Thursday, Oct. 21, against the Bronson Lady Eagles.
The Lady Eagles opened up the match by taking two of the first three games against a Lady Red Devil team that was insistent on beating themselves.
Game one was tied at 12-12 when the Lady Eagles stretched their lead to 19-13 on aggressive play by Brittany Smith and Ashley Mickel. The Lady Eagles went on to win game one 25-15.
In game two it was the Lady Red Devils who jumped out to an early 8-1 lead behind the serving of Rea Samuels.
The Lady Devils came to life as Haley Beckham began to unleash several kill shots off some great sets by Devin Domenico. The Lady Red Devils went on to win game two by a margin of 25-17.
Both games one and two were won by wide margins by both teams, but it was game three that brought out the best in both teams.
It was a game that neither team could get the lead by more than 2 points. The Lady Red Devils held a 1 or 2 point lead until the Lady Eagles tied the game at 17-17 and took their first lead at 18-17.
Game three was again tied at 19-19, 20-20, 22-22 and again at 24-24, as both teams played their best volleyball of the night. The Lady Eagles pulled game three out 26-24 to take a two game to one lead in the match.
Trying to put the match away and spoil the night for the 6 Lady Red Devil seniors, game four was tied at 23-23. Senior Katie Beckham slammed home two perfect serves for the Lady Red Devils giving them a 25-23 win and pulling the match all even sending the match to a deciding game five.
Game five was all Lady Red Devils, as they shot out to a quick 10-2 lead. The Lady Eagles made a short run to pull the score to 12-6 before Beckham slammed home a kill shot, forced a bad return by the Lady Eagles, and little sister Haley Beckham served up an ace for the Lady Red Devils giving them the win and the match 15-6.
The Lady Red Devils begin district play on Tuesday as they take on the Fort White Lady Indians. The Lady Eagles begin their district play Monday against Trenton.
