The story of Mayor Emeritus Gerald Hethcoat's 40 years of service to Williston earned Williston Pioneer editor Carolyn Ten Broeck a first place finish in the Florida Press Association's Weekly Newspaper Contest for Feature Writing - Profile.

Winners were announced last week during the 2019 Florida Media Conference in St. Petersburg.

"Forty years of serving Williston", written at Hethcoat's retirement in 2018, chronicled his life from growing up in Blountville, Tenn. and learning to overcome polio to his move to Florida and the evolution of his political career and dedication to Williston.

Sean Arnold, Chiefland Citizen editor whose work often appears in the Pioneer, won three second place awards in Spot News, Sports Photo and Local Government Reporting. Arnold also placed third in Feature Story.
