  • Lady Devils beat two private...

The Williston Lady Red Devils basketball team came up with two wins against private schools in the past week, both on the road.

Williston defeated Trinity Catholic in a 58-56 thriller a week ago Tuesday, then went to Gainesville to knock off St. Francis, 50-40, on Monday of this week.

The Devils play host to Chiefland Thursday, then travel to Newberry next Tuesday.

WILLISTON 58, TRINITY CATHOLIC 56: In Ocala, Williston jumped out to a 16-point halftime lead, hitting six three-pointers in the first 16 minutes. Kaetta Jackson and Margaret Brown had two each.

  • Game ranks as one of the best

Over the years, I?ve seen hundreds of high school football games, some as a spectator, many as an official and many more as a writer.

Last Friday?s game between Williston and Crystal River has to rank right up there with the best of them, with the only down side that Williston suffered the loss.

It was a chilly night. Anyone who says it?s warmer over by the coast wasn?t on that field that evening.

If you like defense, this wasn?t the place to be. Shay Newcomer threw for more than 550 yards and ran for 52 for Crystal River. He was pretty much their whole offense.

  • Crystal River eliminates...

CRYSTAL RIVER - Williston’s appearance in the Class 3A playoffs ended Friday night in an aerial attack by the Crystal River quarterback.

Helped by some timely penalties against the Red Devils, the Pirates won the wide-open contest, 53-49. Crystal River travels to North Marion this Friday night.

So committed to the pass were the Pirates that they had only two running plays other than those by quarterback Shay Newcomer. One was a fumble, and the other was a late touchdown.

  • Red Devils win tiebreaker to...

DUNNELLON -- Williston High School's football team is going to the playoffs.

The Red Devils dominated both quarters in Monday's three-way tie-breaker for second place in the district, defeating West Port 14-0 and blanking Dunnellon 7-0 to earn the runner-up spot.

Williston will play in the first round of the Class 3A tournament on Friday, Nov. 16, at Crystal River.

  • WHS in tiebreaker Monday after...

ALACHUA - After a weekend of things falling into place, the Williston Red Devils football team finds itself going to a three-way playoff for second place in the district Monday night. The Devils defeated Santa Fe, 46-26, last Thursday, to set up the possibility of a three-way tie for second. Then came the second round, Friday night, where Dunnellon had to lose to North Marion to force the Monday night extra. That's exactly what happened, as the Colts grabbed their fifth straight district title, 28-16. The tie-breaker, one of at least 17 in the state, is to be played Monday, Nov.

  • WHS to play Monday night

North Marion came through for Williston Friday night, defeating Dunnellon, 28-16, to win the district championship. The loss dropped Dunnellon into a three-way tie for second place with Williston and West Port. Although the official pairings are not yet announced, it is believed that the Monday night event will be played at Dunnellon at 7 p.m., with Williston and West Port meeting in the first quarter, and the winner taking on Dunnellon for the right to advance in the playoffs.
