  • Williston boys whip Interlachen

Williston High School's boys are headed for the Class 3A, Region 2 semifinals after pounding visiting Interlachen, 67-29, Thursday night.

The next game for the Devils will be Tuesday night at home against P.K. Yonge, which defeated Union County by 11 points Thursday night.

WHS jumped out to a 19-6 first-quarter lead, and it was all downhill for the Rams after that. With a pressure defense and total dominance on the boards, Williston was never threatened.

In the first half there were 11 fouls called against Williston and only one against the Rams.

  • Boys top Bronson in season finale

As a late-season test before the district tournament, Bronson's home finale against Williston was a great workout for both teams.

"I feel better now," said Williston head coach Dave Vespignani, following the Red Devils' 64-48 win over the Eagles.

The Devils had been shocked the night before when a Trinity Catholic team that was in no way their superior beat them badly.

Eagles head coach Kelly Beckham had also been waiting to see which Williston team emerged after that Trinity game.

  • Girls win softball opener

When you're a leading scorer and rebounder on your high school's girls basketball team, and you're only two days away from a key regional game, how do you spend your time?

If you're Margaret "Nana" Brown of Williston, you help your team to a 5-2 season-opening softball win.

The senior all-state centerfielder drove in four runs with a single and an inside-the-park home run, and made a catch in deep left-center to help put down a Keystone Heights rally in the sixth inning.

  • Girls second in district, visit...

The Williston girls finished second in the Class 3A, District 5 basketball tournament last week, and will travel to Lake Butler to face Union County this Thursday.

The second-seeded team knocked off Newberry, 67-46, in the semifinals, then fell to P.K. Yonge 65-45 on Saturday in what got to be a nasty district final.

In Friday's game, Williston let Newberry hang around for quite a while before pulling away in the second half.

  • Girls defeat Dunnellon

The Williston girls tuned up for the district basketball tournament last weekend with a Senior Night victory over Dunnellon, 65-32.

The team finished with a 17-8 record, 8-2 in the district, and will play Friday at 6 p.m. at Newberry in the district semifinals. The championship game is Saturday night.

Senior Margaret Brown had a powerful double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 16 rebounds to control the frontcourt game for the Devils.

Kaetta Jackson and Kim Dobbins each had 10 points.

  • Boys win on Senior Night

Williston's boys are in the middle of mop-up week, the time between regular season district competition and the post-season, which starts next week at home.

But Coach David Vespignani says his team has some unfinished business this week, and they've already taken care of part of it.

First, though, came Senior Night last week against Dunnellon, and the Devils knocked off the Tigers once more, 65-59.

It was a night to send the seniors off, and Vespignani says one of the goals is never to lose on Senior Night.
