  • Horse Club helps cancer center

The Levy County Horse Club held its seventh annual Breast Cancer Awareness Benefit Trailride in October at Tidewater Trailhead in Goethe State Forest.

  • Bronson loses in tourney final

The Bronson Eagles finished as runners-up in their own Holiday Tournament, after a slow start to beat Umatilla 68-41 and a strong 75-52 win against Middleburg. Facing a tough Dixie County team in the championship round, Bronson could not sustain a slim halftime lead and fell 52-51 after a brutal second half battle.

"We didn't execute when we needed to, and we couldn't get defensive stops," said Bronson head coach Kelly Beckham.

"We've got to be prepared to play against a good team like Dixie County - we've got to bring our 'A' game."

  • Girls top Dunnellon for 7th place

BELLEVIEW - The Williston girls took seventh place in their bracket in the Belleview tournament to benefit cancer research last week.

Williston whipped Dunnellon, 65-50, after a couple of strange losses in the three-day event. The Devils lost the opener against Longwood Lyman, 63-33, then dropped a one-point decision to Pine Ridge.

In the Lyman game, Williston played the Greyhounds almost even in the first, third and fourth quarters. But the Red Devils went stone cold in the second period, being outscored 24-0, enabling Lyman to coast the rest of the way.

  • Boys sixth in Trinity tourney

OCALA - What really made Williston's sixth-place finish in the Papa John's boys basketball tournament at Trinity Catholic last week disappointing was the feeling of what might have been.

The Devils lost the opening game, 58-52, to Wesley Chapel, which eventually went on to win the tournament, defeating Miami Washington and Sparta (N.J.) Pope John XXIII for the championship.

But in that first game the Devils came very close to a victory.

  • WHS boys turn up defensive effort

Williston boys basketball coach David Vespignani wants his players to buy into the philosophy of playing sound defense.

Late last week, it looked as if the plan is working.

Rebounding from a pair of losses to Newberry and Santa Fe, the Red Devils finished fifth in the Hitchcock's Classic, defeating Leesburg and Hawthorne, thereby winning the consolation bracket.

  • Baseball team sponsors shoot-out...

  • Soccer team booted by P.K.

Red Devil soccer fell to P.K. Yonge 6-2 on Friday night. The game was a physical match between the young Red Devil squad and the veteran Blue Wave team.

The Red Devils' senior captain Susie Smith was out with an ankle injury, and senior captain Abby Rodriguez was out for most of the game when she hurt her knee in the first half. The young Devils struggled in the first half, going to the break down 5-0, but came back with a strong effort in the second half, scoring two goals while only allowing P.K. one score.
