A much-needed district victory came along rather easily last week for the Williston softball team, which crunched Newberry, 10-0, in six innings at home.

With a first-round bye in the district tournament likely, the girls needed this win to assure themselves of one less game in their quest for a district championship.

  • Trinity Catholic whips baseball...

OCALA - The visit to Trinity Catholic Tuesday night was long and frustrating, and that was just before the game started.

Willistons baseball team dropped a 15-1, five-inning decision to the Celtics Tuesday night, getting only two hits in the process.

The Red Devils will return home for their own tournament, which starts with four games on Monday (check schedule in calendar).

  • Williston boys win track title

With 99.5 points, Williston boys won the team scoring at Tuesday's running of the Levy County Track Meet, and Red Devil girls placed second in their competition with 54.

Host Cedar Key head coach Brad Penney congratulated Williston coach Becky Hilty on her boys' first-place finish, saying it was the first time in the three-year history of the county meet that any team had beaten the always-dominant Chiefland boys.

Travis Evans led the Red Devil boys' effort, winning the long jump and 100 meters and anchoring the 4x100 relay.

  • WHS boys top Chiefland

After the start of a game which seemingly saw Chiefland's baseball team in full control, Williston suddenly finds itself tied for first place and in a position where a coin toss might determine the top seed in the district.

The Red Devils rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat Chiefland, 11-5, last Thursday night.

  • WMS reaches championship game

Helped by a series of Chiefland mistakes, the Williston Middle School Red Devils came from behind Tuesday to win their baseball division of the Suwannee Middle Athletic Conference, 8-5, over the visiting Braves.

Williston was scheduled to play in Lake Butler Thursday for the conference title.

Trailing 5-4, the Devils entered the bottom of the fifth with the top of the order coming to the plate, the part of the lineup that had been doing damage all afternoon.

  • WHS tops Chiefland in key...

Williston rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat Chiefland, 11-5, in a high school baseball game Thursday night.

The result leaves each team with one district loss as they have split their district season series. If both teams win out and finished tied, a coin toss will decide the top seed. Either way, one of these teams will be seeded first and the other second.

  • WHS boys pick up three district...

With a 6-1 record in the district, the Williston baseball team is ready for a rematch with the team on top.

The Red Devils play host to Chiefland (7-0) tonight (Thursday) in a key district contest.

Williston picked up three wins in the past few days, including a 6-5 win over P.K. Yonge (see story below), a 10-0 whitewash of Fort White and an 8-1 win on the road at Dixie County Tuesday.

  • Girls defeat P.K. Yonge

The Williston Lady Red Devils defeated P.K. Yonge 11-3 on Tuesday night. The Lady Red Devils brought out the bats and avenged an early-season loss to the Blue Wave in a big way. They scored 11 runs on 12 hits. Simone Cannady led the way with an inside-the-park home run. Margaret Brown also joined in the hit parade with three hits, along with three runs scored; she also made some sparkling fielding plays during the game. Senior Heather Porter pitched the first five innings, striking out four P.K. batters, and Tori Stamper pitched two scoreless innings to preserve the win.

  • Baseball team wins pair

Danny Etheridge pitched a two-hitter and Trip Fugate hit a three-run homer as the Williston baseball team defeated Fort White, 10-0, in five innings Saturday night, their second district win in three days.

On Thursday, the Devils had edged P.K. Yonge, 6-5, as Fugate gave a strong relief pitching performance and also hit a home run.

The Devils have two district games this week, playing at Dixie County on Tuesday and entertaining Chiefland on Thursday.

  • Charity golf event to be on...
