  • Girls defeat St. Francis

    The Williston girls are warming up for the district tournament next week at Newberry.

    The team edged Gainesville St. Francis, 64-59, last Saturday night at home.

    The Devils had a 15-point lead in the second quarter, but the visitors gradually whittled it down to the final few minutes when they poulled to within four a 60-56.

    Margaret Brown hit a couple of free throws with 1:40 left to make it 62-56, but St. Francis came back with a field goal and foul shot around a missed free throw by the Devils to make it 62-59.

  • Soccer team falls in districts

    The Williston Lady Red Devils soccer team was defeated by P.K. Yonge 8-0 on Tuesday night at P.K. Yonge, thus eliminating them from the district tournament. The match was played in blustery cold weather, but the game play was full of intense action.

  • Boys fall to two ranked teams

    The Williston Red Devils fell to the P.K. Yonge Blue Wave 55 - 41.

    The Red Devils came out shooting early, and their shots were falling.

    The Devils led 16 - 9 at the end of the first quarter. Devin Timmons had eight points in the first half and Isaac Floyd had six. But after some late second quarter baskets by the Blue Wave, Williston went into the half down by three points.

  • Girls assured of second seed

    The Williston girls wrapped up the second seed in the district basketball tournament with two wins in their final regular season league games during the past week.

    The win over Dixie County, 63-48, assured the Devils of being second to P.K. Yonge and getting a first-round bye in the tournament at Newberry. Then on Tuesday this week, the girls whipped Newberry, 75-45.

    In two non-district games the girls avenged an earlier defeat by topping The Rock, 65-56, but fell to Santa Fe, 69-58.

  • WYAA holds registration

    WYAA holds registration

    Spring sports registration for the Williston Youth Athletic Association will be held on four dates in January:

    Jan. 17, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

    Jan. 19, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    Jan. 24, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

    Jan. 26, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    To register, each player will need a $75 registration fee ($55 for soccer) and a copy of their birth certificate.

    Registration is for t-ball, soccer, baseball and softball. Ages are 4-5 for t-ball, 6-14 for the other sports.

  • Girls resume district play with...

    Finally back at full strength, the Williston High School girls started the post-holiday district push in fine fashion Monday, downing Chiefland 57-21.

    The Devils have only two district losses, both to P.K. Yonge, and have games against Dixie County and Newberry remaining. A second seed in the district would mean an opening round bye in the tournament, which will be held the week of Jan. 28.

    Coach Jason Odom saw his team move to an 11-6 record overall.

  • Boys top Newberry, face P.K....

    The stage is set for a big rematch in high school boys basketball.

    Williston knocked off Newberry in a district contest, 59-51, Tuesday night, avenging its only loss in the district this season.

    Next Tuesday, Jan. 15, the Red Devils visit P.K. Yonge in a battle for first place and possibly the top seed in the district. Earlier this season, the Red Devils handed PK its first district loss in seven years.

  • Youth takes over in loss to St....

    Lady Devils soccer had a tough outing Saturday at St. Francis Catholic. Coming back from the holidays, several players were still out of town. Senior captain Abby Rodriguez was playing on a heavily-wrapped, obviously sore right knee, still trying to recover from an injury suffered last month. The remaining starters and backups looked tentative, leading to their 3-0 loss to the Lady Wolves.
