  • WHS third in preseason volleyball

"One of our goals was to come here and win this preseason tournament," said Emily Gore, head coach of Chiefland varsity volleyball.

They did. Chiefland played scrappy, resourceful ball, taking three games in the first round to put down a more talented Williston team, then finishing off host Bronson in two games in the championship round.

In the finishes of the four-team field, which saw Chiefland first, Bronson second, Williston third and Cedar Key fourth, every coach saw fine-tuning to be done, but also reasons to celebrate.

  • Williston tops Citrus in...

It was during the fourth quarter of last Friday's preseason classic between Inverness Citrus and Williston High School's football teams.

In the west end zone, the Williston players milled around, some sprawled on the ground using their equipment as headrests, watching the junior varsity. The coaches stood and watched as the JV won its quarter.

There was a feeling of satisfaction in the air that only comes after a good performance.

  • Devils host classic Friday

Williston High Schools football team will see its first interscholastic action of the season this Friday, Aug. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at home against Inverness Citrus. The four-quarter game is a preseason classic, which does not count in the standings or won-loss record, but serves as a gauge for the coaches to prepare for next Fridays home opener against P.K. Yonge. This week, the Devils will play three varsity quarters, and the JV will play the fourth quarter. Last year these two teams met in Inverness, but played only six minutes before a storm washed out the competition.

  • Football scrimmage called off

The Williston Red Devils varsity and JV football teams are practicing for the upcoming season. The Red Devil coaching staff dispensed instruction and motivation to their young and talented players. Both squads showed exceptional team speed and fitness. The Red Devils will play at home against Inverness Citrus in the Preseason Classic on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. The first regular game is the following Friday, Sept. 5, at home against P.K. Yonge.

  • LARC softball event a success

CHIEFLAND - "We can hit," said Betty Walker, executive director of Levy Assocation for Retarded Citizens. "We just can't run."

Before Saturday's classic showdown featuring LARC staff and clients against the polical candidates of Levy County, Walker was explaining her strategy for a LARC victory.

"We got to hit the ball out."

LARC won the two-inning tilt by a bare 4-3 margin, but aggressive baserunning, pitching and defense were as much a factor as power at the plate.

  • Bronson gets new basketball coach

BRONSON - Bronson boosters have said all along that the best candidate to succeed legendary head basketball coach Kelly Beckham would be homegrown talent. They were right.

Cedar Key boys basketball head coach Aaron Haldeman will follow Beckham as the new head coach of the Bronson Eagles.

Beckham announced in April that he had accepted the head coach position at Gainesville High School and would be leaving Bronson after serving more than 25 years.
