  • Williston beats host Cape Coral

    CAPE CORAL -- The Williston boys basketball team made coach Dave Vespignani's return to Cape Coral High School a success.

    The Red Devils jumped out to a first-quarter lead and eased past the home team, 55-45, Friday evening.

    Vespignani came to Williston before last season from the Seahawks, where he was an assistant coach..

    Isaac Floyd led Williston with 15 points, while Paul King, with a trio of three-pointers, scored 12. Deonte Welch added 10.

    For the Seahawks, Cameron Hall scored 13, including three off-balance spectacular layups.

  • Williston wins Kingdom opener

    It wasn't exactly a work of art, but Williston High School's boys basketball team won its Kingdom of the Sun tournament opener Friday afternoon, defeating North Marion 53-47.

    Williston plays Saturday at 8 p.m. in the quarterfinals against host Ocala Vanguard, which defeated Union County, 54-39, Friday night.

    Isaac Floyd led the Devils with 14 points and, unofficially, 14 rebounds. He made five of seven free throws down the stretch when WHS really needed them.

  • WHS boys reach Kingdom semifinal

    For the Williston team, coaches and fans, things were a little better Saturday night.

    After a struggling win against North Marion in the opening round of the Kingdom of the Sun basketball tournament, the Red Devils came out Saturday against host Vanguard with a vengeance, winning over the Knights, 52-35.

    Williston will play Monday at 7 p.m. in the tournament semifinals against Jacksonville Wolfson, which defeated Eastside, 60-55, coming back from a 17-point deficit.

  • Williston boys suffer first two...

    OCALA - Williston's run through the Kingdom of the Sun boys basketball tournament ended Monday night as Jacksonville Wolfson downed the Devils, 60-49, in the semifinals.

    The Devils then played a tough Decatur (Ga.) Columbia team for third place, and were beaten again, 78-35.

    The losses wereWilliston's first two this season after 10 straight wins.

    Isaac Floyd was named to the all-tournament team.

    In Monday's contest, the game was a battle between third-ranked teams, Williston in Class 3A and Wolfson in Class 5A.

  • Williston girls fall in opener...

    The Williston Lady Red Devil Basketball team opened their first game in the Eastside Holiday Tournament short on players. They were four players short from the regular roster and played with just eight players dressed.

    The team also came up short, after playing three quarters of intense basketball against the Bradford Lady Tornadoes and lost the game 57-45.

  • Devils play Friday at 3 p.m.

    Williston High School's boys basketball team kept its record unblemished last Friday with a 59-50 win over Dixie County on the road.

    The victory left the Red Devils with an 8-0 record, and a perfect 5-0 through the first half of district play.

    The next game for WHS will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Ocala Vanguard, when the Devils take on North Marion in the first round of the Kingdom of the Sun. A win would put them in an 8 p.m. game on Saturday, while a loss would result in a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday.

    The tournament continues through Tuesday, Dec. 30.

  • Bronson takes sting out of...

    With leading scorer James Rivers still out of action, nursing a sore ankle, the Bronson Eagles took the sting out of the Lafayette Hornets on Dec. 19, and flew to a 73-56 win before a half-filled gym in Bronson.

    The Eagles took their first lead as the first quarter came to an end 14-12. The Hornets continued to keep pace with the Eagles and trailed by just three points, thanks to a 3-point basket by Antwan Brown as the first half ended with the Eagles leading 27-24.

  • Williston tops Lake Weir to win...

    SPARR - It’s back to the district wars for one game for Williston High School’s unbeaten boys basketball team, riding high after a victory in the Tim Brinkley Memorial Tournament at North Marion.

    Williston defeated Lake Weir, 60-53, Saturday night to take the title.

    The Red Devils travel to Dixie County Friday night to complete the first round of the district schedule, then wait a week before playing in the prestigious Kingdom of the Sun tournament at Ocala Vanguard.

  • Win over Vanguard started big...

    SPARR - It was a good way to make an opening statement at the Tim Brinkley Memorial Tournament last week.

    Williston’s boys came out and led all the way in defeating Ocala Vanguard, 71-59.

    Jacques Edwards led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Isaac Floyd with a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) and James Hunt with 13 points. Deonte Welch contributed nine points and nine assists.
