  • Annual high school rodeo is this...

If you notice a lot more horse trailers and campers on their way through Williston, just follow the high school rodeo families to Williston Horseman’s Association Arena. The Johnny Hodge Memorial High School Rodeo has two performances this year, Friday night and Saturday night, April 24 and 25 beginning at 7 p.m. The arena is 11⁄2 miles south of Williston on U.S. Hwy. 41, turn west on Wellbuilt Road.

  • Williston girls win district...

The Williston softball team jumped out to a 7-0 lead Thursday night, then hung on for an 8-7 win over P.K. Yonge, giving the Red Devils the district championship.

Williston will play host to Pierson Taylor on Tuesday night.

Complete details of the game will be published next week.

  • Softball team wins Senior Night...

Friday night April 17, the Williston Lady Red Devil softball team concluded its regular season with an 8-2 win over the North Marion Lady Colts.

Alneidra Graham, a four-year starter in the outfield, was present, while LaPortia Robinson was not.

A leadoff double by the Colts’ Jerelyn Register led to a 1-0 lead as she scored on a single by Nikki Brown in the top of the first inning.

The Red Devils answered with a three and out inning on just five pitches thrown by Colts’ starter Ashley Eludod.

  • Baker squeezes Devils in...

It was the final day of the Red Devil Challenge, the annual spring break high school baseball tournament held in Williston.

The host team, with only four losses all season, was playing Baker County, from the area just west of Jacksonville, which had only two losses all season.

It figured to be a pretty good game, and it was ... for five innings.

Then the Wildcats exploded for 12 runs and defeated the Red Devils, 13-5, to wrap up the three-day event, which saw P.K. Yonge come out of the trio of games with a 3-0 record.

  • Smith wins 300th as Devils top...

A couple of Williston’s young guns took to the mound Monday night, and the result was the 300th coaching win for Jim Smith.

The Red Devils defeated Bronson High School, 11-2, on the opening day of the Red Devil Challenge, a day which saw Baker County defeat Chiefland and P.K. Yonge smother Wildwood.

Smith went with a predominantly young lineup, headed by pitcher Christian Morris who was throwing to catcher Bradley Jones.

  • Howard's two homers,...

It was an offensive showing for the Lady Red Devils April 8, as they played host to the Interlachen Lady Rams, defeating the visitors 15-5 in five innings.

The Rams went three and out in their first at bat as Laurrin Howard took the mound for the second night in a row for the Lady Red Devils.

Howard got the shivering crowd excited when she slammed a three run homer over the left field fence that cleared the 220 foot distance by a good 10 feet above the eight-foot fence. The Red Devils took a 5-0 lead after one complete inning of play.

  • Softball team falls to Santa Fe...

On Friday April 10, the Williston Red Devils played their third game in four nights with the Prom falling on the off night.

After downing their opponents the first two games on Tuesday and Wednesday with ease, the Red Devils ran into a buzz saw in Santa Fe Pitcher Taylor Bowen. Bowen held the Red Devils scoreless until the bottom of the seventh and final inning as her teammates gave her a 6-0 lead going into the seventh.

In the seventh inning Alneidra Graham led off with a perfect bunt and claimed first base.

  • Local athlete Wilder to ride in...

Kaley Wilder is what cowboys call an All-Around Hand. She does more than one event in High School Rodeo. You can come watch our local high school star athlete compete at the Florida High School Rodeo Association when it converges on the Williston Horseman’s Arena next week, April 24th and April 25th for two nights of rodeo competition.

  • Devils rough up Indians

The only sure thing about the county’s best baseball matchup - Chiefland-Williston - is that there are no sure things. Weeks ago, Williston tried hard to give away the home game to the visiting Indians, before snatching back the 8-6 win. Saturday, the Devils came to Chiefland and their hosts hoped to get them back.

They didn’t. After six innings of close play among some of the best talent in the area, Williston exploded for nine runs in the top of the seventh to down Chiefland 18-6 in the last district game.
