  • Jones ends playoff hopes for...

    ORLANDO - The boys basketball season came to a disappointing end last Saturday for Williston as the Red Devils were beaten by Orlando Jones, 69-40, in the Class 3A, Region 2 semifinal.

    The win sent Jones to the state semifinals in Lakeland this week, where it was scheduled to play Marianna on Wednesday night. The Class 3A final is Friday.

    One small step for Williston, one bigger one for the future.

    The Williston boys basketball team broke into new territory this past season, reaching the final eight in the Class 3A playoffs for the first time.

    Never mind that the Devils lost to Orlando Jones, on the road, in the regional final that could have sent them to the four-team state tournament in Lakeland. The progress made in the basketball program under coach David Vespignani over the past two years is almost mind-boggling.

  • FHSAA proposes limit on number...

    The Florida High School Athletic Association is proposing some big changes in high school athletics for the next school year, cutting back on the number of regular season games allowed for each team in all sports except varsity football, and changing districts for sports other than football, whose new districts have previously been announced.

  • Devil baseball team tops...

    Coming off two games this past week, the Williston Red Devils were trying to give the Chiefland Indians a win. After dropping a one run 6-5 game to Trinity Catholic on Tuesday Feb. 24, the Red Devils opened their district season on Thursday Feb. 26. Caleb Mederas spread 7 strike outs over five innings as the Red Devils stopped the Newberry Panthers 11-1 in a five inning stoppage.

  • Williston loses to Jones

    ORLANDO -- Williston's run in the state boys basketball playoff ended Saturday night as Orlando Jones outshot and outrebounded the Red Devils on the way to a 69-40 win.

    The loss ends Williston's season at 22-9 while Jones heads to Lakeland for the Class 3A semifinals, where it will play Marianna Wednesday night.

    With Isaac Floyd saddled with three fouls and scoreless in the first half, the Devil offense also sputtered throughout the game.

    In addition, Jones shot 21-for-22 from the foul line.

  • Williston wins, reaches regional...

    It wasn’t the final hurdle for the Williston boys basketball team to clear, but it sure was a big one.

    Trailing with one minute to play, WHS scored the final seven points of the game and defeated P.K. Yonge, 55-50, at home Tuesday night in the Class 3A, Region 2 semifinal.

    The win sends the Devils on the road for the regional final. They will play at Orlando Jones Saturday night. Jones defeated Wildwood Tuesday, 61-53.

  • Williston wins, travels to...

    DIRECTIONS: Take Interstate 75 to Wildwood, bear left on the Florida Turnpike (toll road). Go into Orlando, get off at the East-West Expressay (SR 408), also a toll road. Go east, get off at Tampa Avenue. The exit bears to the right, but you will then make an immediate left on Carter Street. Take Carter to Rio Grande, make a right on Rio Grande and the school is immediately on the left (810 S. Rio Grande). Directions provided by Jones High School.

  • Softball team splits

    The Williston Lady Red Devils scored 20 runs, on 8 timely base hits, and 8 walks and 2 hit batters to down the Newberry Lady Panthers 20-0 Friday night Feb. 20.

    The game was halted after the Red Devils took a 15-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning scoring another 5 runs to take a 20-0 lead.

    With two outs and base runners on second and third base, Coach Patterson had the base runner step off third to end the inning.

    The Panthers came up to bat in the top of the fifth inning and went three up and out to end the game.

  • Baseball team pounds Union County

    The baseball game scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21, was upstaged by the February breast cancer awareness recognition ceremony.

    Junior Miss Williston Harley White introduced the cancer survivors present and read the names of the survivors who were not present. Beccie Ming and Brenda Stephens were present with their "Catchin' a Cure" shirts on with the word Survivor across the back.

    Doctor Robert Carroll from Gainesville gave a short talk to the crowd about the leaps and bounds the medical profession is making to find a cure for breast cancer.
