  • North Marion edges Williston

    SPARR - If baseball is a game of inches, then high school football must be a game of millimeters.

    Williston came oh-so-close to a win last Friday, falling to North Marion, 21-19, in a key district game which, when over, left a lot of scenarios by which the district standings could be finalized ... which will happen Friday night.

    On that evening Williston plays host to Santa Fe in a homecoming game, while North Marion visits Dunnellon.

    Here are the possibilities:

    * If North Marion and Williston win, they finish 1-2 and will both go to the playoffs.

  • Volleyball season ends

    FORT WHITE -- Williston got by Newberry handily in the first round of the Class 2A District 5 volleyball tournament but came unsewn in the semifinal match against Ft. White. The Lady Devils beat the Panthers easily in three straight games of 25-12, 25-18, 25-20. In their second match of the night, they also matched up well against the Indians, taking the first game 25-11, but then lost three straight (16-25, 18-25, 19-25) in a bewildering letdown.

  • Bronson falls to St. Joseph

    St. Joseph junior running back Scott Jones had his right arm in a cast for his homecoming game Friday, left over from when he broke it two weeks ago. It didn't matter. The green-clad dynamo let the plaster trail as he racked up almost 270 yards on the ground and five touchdowns against his former coach. The Flashes beat Bronson 48-15.

  • Williston defeats West Port

    By the time you read this, all eyes will be looking ahead to this Friday's football game featuring Williston at North Marion. A win would give Williston the district championship.

    A North Marion win, however, would not eliminate Williston, with the Colts still having a game against Dunnellon. A Dunnellon win this week against West Port and next week against North Marion would force a three-way tie-breaker if Williston were to beat Santa Fe and North Marion beats Williston.

    But a Williston win this Friday would eliminate all of that.

  • Williston opens district play...

    DUNNELLON - Speed kills, again.

    Even the Dunnellon football announcer commented that when the Williston Red Devils turned the corner outside, they weren't going to be caught.

    That became obvious quickly as Williston opened its district schedule last Friday with a 41-31 win over the Tigers that wasn't as close as the score indicated.

    The win left Williston with a 4-2 record this season and, more importantly, a 1-0 mark in the district.

  • Runners prepare for county meet

    CEDAR KEY -- In cross country, there are hills, and then there are hills. Cedar Key just has the former, but the Shark varsity boys and girls say that year round practice on two stretches - the spot near the museum and the hot, lonely stretch of Gulf Boulevard by the cemetery - may put them in good shape for the most brutal course of the year - Mount Dora.

    Cedar Key runners are already looking ahead to districts, because of the reactions their home course got from both local runners and visitors alike in Thursday's Cedar Key Invitational.

  • Bronson falls to Lopez

    Bronson slid to .500 while playing their best football yet. Now 3-3, the Eagles dueled Daytona's Father Lopez to a standstill before falling 27-21 in overtime. This, against a team that clobbered them 56-12 last year.

    "We grew up a little today," said Bronson head coach Al Cooksey. "With so much losing behind us, we have to build a culture where we expect to win."

  • Williston tops Chiles

    TALLAHASSEE - Williston's football team rallied in the second half to defeat Lawton Chiles High School, 28-16, last Friday night in the final preliminary before district play.

    Beginning with this week's game at Dunnellon, the Red Devils will play their four district games in succession in five weeks, with an open date next week.

    The last time the Devils visited Dunnellon was last fall, when they were winning the three-way tiebreaker that put them into the playoffs.

    This should be a battle of the front lines, with both teams using the run to pile up the yardage.

  • WMS runners win title

    Cedar Key's Joseph Bishop got another second place finish in a Levy County cross country meet - this time at Chiefland, behind Ft. White's Matthew Waddington, whom he'd beaten at Williston two weeks before.

    Bishop grouched for a few minutes, complained that Waddington "had a better stride," then allowed as how this was his best race ever.

    Alex Travis of Williston, who finished just behind Bishop, said he, too, had run his best race on the shady course.

    "It was nice and cool under the trees," he said.

  • Pro Rodeo was a success

    The night out at the Pro Rodeo was a great evening of entertainment. There was something for most everyone that likes the outdoors and cowboys and livestock. The weather was perfect and the rodeo fans had a lot of enthusiasm.
