  • WHS looks good in pre-season game

    Football is here, folks, and Williston's Big Red played its preseason game last Friday against the Dunnellon Tigers. 

    The varsity squad played the first three quarters and junior varsity players got an early taste of the Friday night lights to close out the game in the fourth.

    After months of summer workouts followed by a grueling fall camp, high school football players finally get an opportunity to show off their hard work under the lights tonight against someone wearing an opposing jersey.

    The Bronson football team won’t be in a district for the upcoming season. 

    The Eagles have pulled out of District 1A-7, which includes Chiefland, Williston, Newberry, Branford, Dixie County and reigning state champion Trenton.

    Head coach Curtis Stacy says the move was made to give Bronson a schedule that’s a more competitive fit for the program as it goes through a rebuilding process.

    Tough times were ahead for the Bronson football program at this time last year. 

    Despite coming off back-to-back non-losing seasons for the first time in 10 years, it was dealt a series of offseason blows, culminating in the departure of its head coach on the first day of football practice, that would lead to a 0-10 fall campaign.

    The Red Devils entered this past week with a record of eight wins and eight losses but their record looked very different come April 1. 

    Big Red had three home games – two in conference and one out of conference and all ended with needed wins for the home team.  At the end of the week Williston’s record was 11-8 with a conference best record of 8-1.

    The Red Devils hosted the Santa Fe Raiders on March 7 and fell in a tough duel 3-2. The game was close the whole way and a majori- ty of the game was decided on just a few plays.
