  • Now I remember for her

    When I was growing up my mom stayed home. She worked, and worked, and worked. At home. She had 10 children. Twins were born at the end, myself and my sister Wendy. My mom was a master of talking on the phone, cooking, and carrying on multiple conversations with me or one or two of my siblings and looking out for us at the same time.

    Before computers and the internet, she was the original multi-tasker.

    We at WAG (the Williston Animal Group) and Trained Dog Happy Dog are pleased to report that our Canine Play Day was a great success this year.  We netted more than $2,500 for WAG’s mission of rescuing and finding new homes for abused and abandoned animals in the Williston area.

    In 1875 the Kentucky Derby was first run. There have been 134 winners since then.

    On the 100th anniversary of the Derby, Foolish Pleasure won.

    We used to have a sign stating Foolish Pleasure won the Derby. Where has it gone?

    Foolish Pleasure, one of 134 winners, was from Williston.

    Where is the sign? I have asked the city two or three times when it was going to be put up and the answer I received was “soon.”

    You may not have heard, but someone died at the Williston Youth Athletic Association this past week. 

    Someone had been responsible for cleaning the restrooms, cleaning the fields, making sure the trash cans were moved to the parking area for weekly pickup. 

    Someone also was responsible for lining fields for the sporting events, operating concessions, making sure repairs were done to bleachers, buildings, lights, and all other things that were broken. 

  • Schooling the teacher

    I taught freshman composition in the morning at Central Florida Community College in Chiefland then attended middle school in Bronson Tuesday afternoon. And I was schooled.

    I know that sounds strange. But it’s the truth.

    I went back to middle school because my 10-year-old son, Taylor, who is in fifth grade spent 40 minutes talking to me the night before about a presentation on nicotine that he had seen by a “real scientist,” Dr. Victor DeNoble.

  • How I joined the mob, and what...

    My children were the first to blame. It was a way to keep up with them. Then Jenna McKenna, sports editor at the Chiefland Citizen, added to the blame when she introduced me to Mob Wars. A year later, I find that I am an addict–and I don’t want help.

    Facebook is my connection to the world.

    In the beginning, I spent way too much time saving the rainforest, raising money for St. Jude’s and playing Mob Wars.

  • Do we say thank you enough?

    It took my father’s unexpected death to make me truly realize how fleeting life is.

    It was then, at the age of 33, that I promised myself I would not let an opportunity pass to tell people how much they mean to me or thank them for their influence and inspiration on my life.

    For the most part I’ve held up to that promise over the years.

    I tell people Iee^love them more freely.

    On Tuesday afternoon (September 8th), I received a phone call from a

    friend of mine who is an educator in this county. The caller said,

    "Well they didn't show it." For a moment I couldn't imagine what the

    caller was talking about. Then it hit me. The speech - the speech

    the President of the United States was to give the country's

    schoolchildren about the value of a good education and about staying

    in school!

    Matt Cravey, FFA Advisor and Agriculture teacher at Dixie County High School suffered a stroke and other health complications this past summer and has been shuttling between hospital and nursing home in an all out effort to rehabilitate and get on the road to recovery. His wife, their three sons and extended family are working hard to see that Matt gets the care he needs.

    As you can imagine, the medical costs are staggering and the family’s budget and insurance are nearly exhausted. Matt and his family need our prayers and financial support.

    With regard to Ann Coffel’s letter in the Williston Pioneer dated Sept, 17, 2009.

    If you had taken the time to call Bob Hastings - Levy County School Superintendent at 486-5231, he would have been very accommodating.

    He would have told you that during that time frame of the speech from the president to our school children a state mandated testing was being conducted i.e. FAIR and Think Link.

    Your diatribe about this subject was not fact based.

    Making it interesting not an easy...

    Raleigh is a quiet community nestled in farmland just east of Williston. Residents enjoy the solitude and keep to themselves. No one suspected that last week all that would change by the apparent abduction of a child and her pony by what authorities are calling an “alien life form.”

    Got your attention? If I read that in my hometown paper, you can bet your bottom dollar I’d continue reading.

  • Don’t let heavy backpack...

    The American Chiropractic Association and TMC Chiropractic in Williston offer the following tips to prevent the needless back pain an overstuffed backpack could cause the student in your household:

    Make sure the backpack weighs no more than 10 percent of your child’s body weight. This means a 100-pound child should carry no more than 10 pounds on his or her back.

    A backpack with individualized compartments will help you position the contents most effectively and ensure that your child’s sandwich isn’t flattened by a heavy textbook.

  • Assessing Emergency Medical Services

    EMS assessments are changing this year. Historically, all property owners have paid the same annual amount of $75, regardless of their size or the frequency of calls. This meant that Wal-Mart paid the same assessed fee as a residential property owner. In an effort to be more equitable, a formula based on square footage for commercial, institutional and industrial/warehouse designated property was recommended by a company hired by the county to look at our assessment structure.

    The swine flu is not coming–it’s already here. The question now is what will happen when our kids all get together when school opens Aug. 24. Will there be an explosion of new cases then, or later in the fall when the traditional flu spreads through society? A vaccine for the swine flu will not be ready until mid-October and right now that vaccine will take two shots given 21-28 days apart.

    Who needs that much Drama?

    Drama is defined an exciting, emotional or unexpected series of events or set of circumstances. Most of us know that. But there are so many of us who live it. Drama. With a capital “D”.

    In any environment, whether it’s school, work, family or social, there’s always Drama. Most people keep it to themselves, handle it privately and we never know what is going on.

    But then there are those who over exaggerate everything and thrive on the crisis of the minute. You know them too.

    Drivers should take note and remember traffic safety rules when school is back in session.

    It only takes one mistake to change the course of a life forever.

    After reading the article on the mail carrier that failed to deliver mail facing a possible five-year prison sentence plus $250,000 fine.

    I understand that this is a serious offense, messing with the government and the U.S. mail. Yes, she should be punished. I think that’s a bit harsh of a sentence for not delivering mail when people can get away with starving, neglecting and abusing horses, pets and children with sometimes no convictions.
