    4-H Roundup

    to be Aug. 23

    Levy County 4-H will hold its annual Roundup Aug. 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m at the Extension Office in Bronson. The Hartley Barbecued Chicken Contest will begin at 8 a.m.

  • Levy Fair seeks judges

    The Levy County Fair Association is seeking judges for its pre-qualifying karaoke events.

    The contests are as follows:

    Sept. 1 - 11 a.m. "Outside" at the Amvets post 88 in Bronson, (the new location by the race track).

    Sept. 20 - 11 a.m. Tommy Usher Center, Chiefland.

    Oct. 4 - 11 a.m. Peanut Festival in Williston.

    Oct. 11 - 1 p.m. Coconut's at Cedar Key.

    The group is also seeking qualified candidates for the following judging roles during the fair itself (Oct. 30 - Nov. 2):

    Thursday: Battle of the Bands - Day One.

    Fish fry Friday

    at Holy Family

    A fish fry will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Alt. U.S. 27, Williston, on Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. The adult price is $7 and the child's price is $4. Takeouts are available. This fund-raiser helps people in the community with their financial problems.

    There are door prizes of a free ticket to the following fish fry and a drawing for an individual winner with a small gift in appreciation of attending this dinner.

    New Life Temple Fellowship Inc. presents the annual High Compassion High Community Awareness Day on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Southeast 10th Street, behind the A&S Store.

    Bethany Church

    to hold centennial

    On July 25-27 the Bethany Church of Christ will celebrate its centennial with a gospel meeting.

    Each day one of the men who previously preached at this church will return with a lesson on how the Love of God can save your soul, and preserve a congregation of believers for 100 years.

  • The thread that runs for true

    Small, young voices, many with questions, filled the large place more used to mature conversation. One bemoaned that she could not get the thread into the eye of a needle. Another tried to fit her small finger into a large thimble before selecting another from the box of supplies.

    Earlier in the day all had learned to sagely use scissors and cut material. Now they were threading needles and learning to make stitches of an even size, preferably small and not so tight their material puckered.

  • Wild observations

    After the usual first day rat race, I made it to Budapest, pronounced "pech" or something like that. I planned to pick up an Enterprise rental car at Gainesville Airport, but when I got there, I found out they wouldn't take my debit card. So I flew (almost) to Orlando in my own vehicle and parked it and hoped for the best. Orlando Airport was on level orange security alert which made things even more stressful, getting into the boarding area and waving goodbye to my suitcase, hoping it would end up with me. I flew to New York JFK Airport and then on to Budapest.

    Scouts to hold

    final car wash

    Boy Scout Troop 163 of the First United Methodist Church in Williston will be holding its final car wash of the summer, trying to raise money to help offset the cost of fuel for its annual summer camp. This year 17 boys are going to Camp Rainey Mountain in Clayton, Ga. The cost of diesel fuel for the bus will be about $1,000. This is an enormous cost for such a small troop.

  • Rotary holds installation banquet

    The Rotary Club of Williston held its annual Officer Installation Banquet on Friday, June 20 at the Williston Womans Club. The event was well attended by Rotarians, area business and government leaders, as well as many local political candidates.

  • Wild observations

    esterday, which happened to be June 14th, I picked blackberries in the wood next door. Blackberries are not all made equal, and some varieties that grow in our area produce larger fruit than others. I know this from observation. Some of the berries I picked were about an inch long. I look for the largest fruit, because then my container fills quicker. Large is not the only criteria. I also look for ripe berries, but not too ripe. They should be easily taken from the stem and a nice shiny blue black color.

    On Saturday Night June 21, Bronson Motor Speedway will host its first ever Politicians Rally. An invitation was sent to all 23 candidates running for office in Levy County to come and attend and address the crowd.
