  • Methodists prepare for Focused...

    First United Methodist Church of Williston (FUMC) will begin a Focused Living Retreat in October, but prior to that, 45-plus members-young and old, men and women, those who are retired and those who work long hours each week, gathered Saturday morning to spruce up the church's campus.

    Going back over my columns, I've noticed bugs get short shrift. What to name a particular bug can be a puzzler. Do spiders belong in the bug category? What about butterflies? Is "bug" even a correct term. To help me, I checked out National Audubon's pocket guide to insects and spiders.

    Candidate holds

    meeting Friday

    Congressional candidate Tim Cunha, running for the 6th District seat, will hold Williston town meeting on Friday, Sept. 12, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Victorian Tea Room, 115 S.E. 1st Ave., one block south of Noble Avenue. Light refreshments will be served by the Democratic candidate, who will face Republican incumbent Cliff Stearns in November.

  • Ride to Provide a blessing to LARC

    U.S. 19 looks like a pretty big piece of road, at least until both northbound lanes are crammed with motorcycles - some 275 of them. Cars and trucks waited, and their drivers stared, as a mile-long parade of chrome, fringed leather and flames flowed through the tiny U.S. 19-State Road 24 interchange into Otter Creek Saturday morning.

  • Doctor turns to tunes after his...

    The word "retirement" can mean different things to different people. Take Dr. Lou Jensen, for example. He "retired" after a 34-year-career working at a medical clinic in Cocoa-Rockledge where he had spent a great deal of time treating space center employees. That was in 1988. Instead of taking life easy, though, he stayed active in his profession. He was often sent to different Florida cities to fill in where medical help was needed. He worked in clinics and nursing homes in a number of towns from the Panhandle to Lake City to Dowling Park.

  • News from the Levy County Fair

    The Levy County Fair held the first of its four pre-qualifying karaoke contests on Monday, Sept 1. It was a great time with a supportive attendance. The Fair Association puts on these pre-qualifying contest in order to pick the top five singers, who will line up to compete during the Fair on Saturday, Nov. 1. They will compete to be crowned the greatest karaoke singer in Levy County.

  • Butterfly days

    While another tropical storm brews in the south, I'm looking at notes I took after the last storm. When I described being at home during that storm, I wrote that I didn't see any wild animals around the cabin. That's true. A day or two later was a different story.

    Flag Team plans

    barbecue Saturday

    The Williston High School Flag Team will hold a barbecue lunch on Saturday, Sept. 6 in front of Williston City Hall.

    Tickets are $8 and include barbecued chicken, potato salad, baked beans and dessert.

    All proceeds go to the flag team.

  • Karaoke contest held

    The usual suspects triumphed at Monday's karaoke contest held at AMVETS Post 88 in Bronson, though the menu of music on tap was long and deep.

    It took a three-way sing-off to crown Carissa Fields of Chiefland, with her letter-perfect rendition of Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On." Bronson's Reginald Stacy placed second with his tiebreak song of "Purple Rain," by Prince, and Samantha Beckham was third with Martina McBride's "Independence Day."

    Levy County 4-H will hold its annual Roundup Aug. 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m at the Extension Office in Bronson. The Hartley Barbecued Chicken Contest will begin at 8 a.m.

  • Levy Fair seeks judges

    The Levy County Fair Association is seeking judges for its pre-qualifying karaoke events.

    The contests are as follows:

    Sept. 1 - 11 a.m. "Outside" at the Amvets post 88 in Bronson, (the new location by the race track).

    Sept. 20 - 11 a.m. Tommy Usher Center, Chiefland.

    Oct. 4 - 11 a.m. Peanut Festival in Williston.

    Oct. 11 - 1 p.m. Coconut's at Cedar Key.

    The group is also seeking qualified candidates for the following judging roles during the fair itself (Oct. 30 - Nov. 2):

    Thursday: Battle of the Bands - Day One.

    Fish fry Friday

    at Holy Family

    A fish fry will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Alt. U.S. 27, Williston, on Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. The adult price is $7 and the child's price is $4. Takeouts are available. This fund-raiser helps people in the community with their financial problems.

    There are door prizes of a free ticket to the following fish fry and a drawing for an individual winner with a small gift in appreciation of attending this dinner.
