  • Wild observations

    One of the things I did at the beginning of this new year is organize and file away resource information. While reacquainting myself with this literature, I found some bits worth passing along.

    One article, written by Anne Mackay, features winter gardening. While northern gardens may remain untouched for several months, here in Florida it's already time to think about spring plants. Mackay's article focuses on native Florida wildflowers.

  • Library system hosts forums

    Thomas Edison once said "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work." Don't miss this opportunity to assist the Levy County Public Library System in the formation of their Long Range Plan for 2008-2013. It will only look like work as it will be as easy as sharing your opinions.

  • Baldwin, Breeden to wed

    Mr. and Mrs. John Dan Baldwin III of Gainesville announce the engagement of their daughter, Erin Danielle Baldwin, to James Everett Breeden III, son of Mr and Mrs. James Everett Breeden, Jr. of Williston.

  • Coleman 'credentialed'

    Jim Coleman, city manager of Williston, recently received the Credentialed Manager designation from ICMA, the premier local government leadership and management organization.

    Coleman is one of only 1,009 local government management professionals currently credentialed through the ICMA Voluntary Credentialing Program. This is the Williston city manager's fifth annual and consecutive credential award by ICMA.

  • Wild observations

    In my younger life, I never expected to end up in Florida. Now during the winter holidays I've come to appreciate Florida's appeal. On Christmas I walked in the next door woods, enjoying the soft light on olive green live oak leaves, russets of turkey oaks, golden tans of rushes and brown to gray bark of tree trunks. Bluejays called in tree tops; chickadees chittered in lower branches.

    Cancer awareness presentation Saturday

    The public is invited to come and listen to facts given about colon and prostate cancer. This information will be given by Dr. Mary Hill from Alachua County.

    The presentation will be at the Oasis Center, 115 S.E. 10th St., on Saturday, Jan. 12, from 9-10 a.m. For information call 528-1249, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Avis Seabrook is the sponsor.

    Whether you are at home all day, as Jim and I now are, or are still a part of the working force, nothing is more satisfying or comforting than to sit down to a simple supper of a bowl of steaming hot soup (this includes chili) with muffins, cornbread or homemade bread.

    It seems that since Jim retired last June we have been on a campaign to do all the things that we never had time or energy to get to before then. First it was to get the 5th wheel ready and up to Indiana, where we spent September and October. Once home it was time to begin holiday preparations.

    The Friends of the Williston Public Library will hold its first program of the year on Thursday, Jan. 17. It will be in the library starting at 7:30 p.m. and will be a combination visual and speaking program.

  • Landmark explores possibility of...

    Landmark Communications Inc., parent of Landmark Community Newspapers, Inc. (LCNI), owner of the Williston Pioneer Sun News, has hired national investment firms to explore selling the Norfolk, Va.-based company.

    "I can confirm that Landmark Communications has retained investment banks JPMorgan and Lehman Brothers to assist in exploring strategic alternatives, including the possible sale of the company's businesses," said Richard F. Barry III, vice chairman of the company.

    Christmas and even New Year's is past for another year. We have all somehow survived one more year of trying some new recipes and making the traditional ones. It seemed like I would never be done; there was always one more recipe to prepare. But then, a few days before Christmas, everything was made and stored so that gift plates could be made and Jim and I would have goodies throughout the remainder of the season.

    The general meeting of the Levy County Fair Association will be held on Thursday, Jan. 3, at 6:30 p.m. at the Williston City Hall.

    'Grease' auditions set

    "Grease" is the word for the Suwannee Valley Players, who will perform the musical in March.

    Auditions are being held Saturday, Jan. 5, at 10 a.m. and Monday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. at the Chief Theatre, 25 E. Park Ave., Chiefland.

  • Wild observations

    Along with changes in terrain, I've also observed changes in mood while walking in our natural Florida landscapes.

    Recently I've been out in the woods during dusk, when the sun is disappearing and the trees look black against an orange-streaked sky.

    At dusk in the next door woods and around the cabin my mood can becomes peaceful and quiet as I watch for night creatures to come forth.

    JANUARY

    4 - The City Council voted 3-2 to place a referendum on the ballot increasing council terms to three years.

    The Florida League of Cities honored Mayor Gerald Hethcoat with a proclamation and a pin marking his 25 years in elective office.

    11 - A former radio operator tells of his World War II role in Greenland.

    City election qualifying is next week.

    The water district has limited lawn watering.

    18 - The controversy over City Manager Jim Coleman's contract heated up at the council meeting.

  • Joining family and friends on New...

    Growing up in the northern part of our country usually meant snow and ice on New Year's Eve,. This also meant that we rang in the New Year from our own living room on many of those years. Of course, there was no shortage of celebration complete with streamers, noisemakers and party hats! For the most part the evening was spent with our immediate family and a few friends who lived close enough to walk (or snow-shoe, if necessary) over to our house for the traditional counting down of the minutes until the New Year arrived.

    Spring sports registration set for WYAA

    Spring sports registration for the Williston Youth Athletic Association will be held on four dates in January:

    Thursday, Jan. 17, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

    Saturday, Jan. 19, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    Thursday, Jan. 24, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

    Saturday, Jan. 26, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    To register, each player will need a $75 registration fee and a copy of their birth certificate.

    Registration is for t-ball, soccer, baseball and softball. Ages are 5-6 for t-ball, 7-14 for the other sports.

  • Wild observations

    For starters, I'll talk about my nature observations, and then to celebrate the New Year, I'll have a little fun with words.

    A baby raccoon walked by the back of the cabin, checked a water dish and continued along the fence row. Raccoons remind me of animals like wallabies that have longer hind legs than front legs. It gives them a peculiar slanted look, their hind end higher than their front end. Raccoons don't exhibit such an extreme difference between front and hind legs, but still it's noticeable.

  • From the kitchen

    If anything like mine; kitchens everywhere have had a steady stream of baking and cooking going on during this entire month. This year I am finished early with all the baking of treats that Jim likes to have around and that we give as gifts. My big table is cleared and everything put away for another year and now I am going to enjoy the remaining days leading up to fixing Christmas dinner.
