  • Relay a success

    In 2011 more than 1.5 million Americans were diagnosed with some type of cancer and more than half million people lost their lives to the horrific disease. Those staggering figures do not include skin cancers, which do not have to be reported to cancer registries.
    The American Cancer Society–and thousands of people across this county think that’s too many lives lost and each year spends time, sweat and tears organizing its largest fund-raiser, Relay for Life.

  • Banned because of truth

    Today I learned that history is offensive.
    For a couple years now, the Williston Pioneer has been active in the world of social media with both Twitter and Facebook. It’s a good way to get the word out quickly and keep mobile folks informed while they wait on their printed word.
    For the last several months, I’ve not only wished our  “friends” happy birthday and anniversary, but I’ve started posting a Today in History segment, that is most of the time gleaned from history.com.

  • Dedee McLeod has it right

    Dedee McLeod’s long-standing mantra has been “I hate cancer.”
    Well, so do I and this year with more passion than I’ve had in a long time.
    Cancer devastates, cripples and paralyzes those it comes in contact with. Whether you are the one who has it, or the one who cares for the patient or the one who loves the patient, you can never be the same once cancer invades your life.
    My hatred began first with my mother’s bout with uterine cancer when I was 11 years old, and really too young to appreciate what she was going through.

    Agrees with changing school mascot

    To the editor:
     Reading the letters to the editor regarding the time to change the school mascot,  I  totally agree  with  sign man Steve. 
     I  always thought the same–why a devil? We try to instill in our children to choose the right path and the devil, well, is just thde devil. We really need to find a new mascot for our children.

  • Don’t mess with tradition

    If we only learned one thing this week it is that Williston residents are passionate about their school, their teams and their mascot.
    When we posted a seemingly innocuous question on Facebook whether it was time the Red Devil mascot be changed, as suggested last week in a letter to the editor, we had no idea the maelstrom it would elicit.
    Now a week later, people are still sounding off and the sentiment is clear–don’t mess with tradition.

    March is Women’s History Month, which makes it the perfect time to reflect on the great accomplishments of our female ancestors. In Florida, a state famous for its magnificent natural resources, residents can be proud to acknowledge three women who were pioneers in protecting and preserving our environment.
