  • Thinking out loud

    Today–Thursday–is my birthday. For as long as I can remember it’s something I have not looked forward to, mostly because I’ve always lived in colder climates. 

    As a SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) sufferer, the thought of my birthday only exacerbated the seasonal depression I fought. Moving to Florida has helped both–there’s more sunlight here, and instead of the three or four months of doldrums I once had, it’s usually only a couple weeks now.

  • Disappointed with commissioners’ action

    To the editor:

    It was with great sadness and surprise that I read the article entitled “County snuffs out teens’ tobacco resolution” in the Jan. 4, 2012 edition of the Williston Pioneer. Having grown up in Williston, I have great interest as to what my family members are exposed.

    As a Registered Nurse, high school teacher, S.W.A.T. advisor and one who has lost several family members to tobacco use, I was disappointed in the commission’s rejection of the resolution. Almost 89 percent of tobacco users begin using by age 18.

  • Disagrees with faith columnist

    To the editor:

    I was saddened by Pastor Stewart’s opinion piece in last week’s Pioneer.

    His unprovoked attack on evolution seemed based on a fundamental denial of the purpose of science, which is to simply observe and document the ongoing revelation of existence.

    He suggests that a convicted felon should have greater authority on this subject than a Nobel Prize winning physicist, another cause for concern.

    Holiday Hope a success
    To the editor:
    We at Holiday Hope would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to the many benefactors that enable so many children in our community to have a joyful Christmas.
     First and foremost, to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, who has provided us with a facility large enough to store, organize, and distribute Christmas additions to hundreds of local families, our deepest gratitude.

  • Thank you, Williston

    To the editor:
    An open letter to the town of Williston:
    I was going through your town late one evening after a long trip from Tampa when I came across your wonderful holiday lights.
    They brought a smile to my face and made me realize that throughout the whole drive, I had not seen one town with Christmas lights.
    So thank you to the townspeople of Williston who show a wonderful display of the holiday spirit and put warmth in the heart of a tired driver.

  • Apology from mayor and council president

    To the citizens of Williston:
    On behalf of the city council, we wish to extend our deepest apology to those in attendance at the council meeting on Dec. 6.
    It is regretful that those in attendance, especially the friends and parents of the children for Student of the Month and FFA, to have experienced such a quarrelsome display by council members.

  • Twelfth Night may be the best I can do

    Are you ready for Christmas? I am not even sure why people ask that. What does it mean exactly?
    Is the house decorated? The presents bought and wrapped? The cookies baked? The cards mailed?
    If that’s what folks want to know, then my resounding answer is no. I am not ready for Christmas.
    It’s been an unusual six weeks at Ten Broeck Manor. In addition to the daily grind, there’s also been scattered doctors’ appointments, family obligations and several monkey wrenches thrown into the mix.
