  • Veterans' parade is in Williston

    The city of Williston will host the 2017 Levy County Veterans Day Parade Saturday, Nov. 11.

    The parade, down Noble Avenue, begins at 10 a.m.

    After the parade, a commemoration service will take place in Heritage Park.

    Mayor R. Gerald Hethcoat, the city's organizer, said he hopes many of the county's veterans will participate in the parade that honors them.

    The Levy County Sheriff’s Office reports the following arrests:

    • Oct. 11, Christopher Robert Barwick, 46, Fanning Springs, violation of domestic violence order of protection, following/harassing/cyberstalking after injunction. ROR.

    • Oct. 9, Lisandro Bernal, 31, Reddick, failure to stop at crash, no DL, giving false ID to LEO. Bond $26,000.

    • Oct. 9, Denise Necole Brown, 21, Chiefland, touch or strike. Bond $2,500.

    • Oct. 14, Casey Michael Buesing, 33, Cedar Key, VOP.

  • Harvey Weinstein and me

    When the first accusation against movie producer Harvey Weinstein came out, I wasn't too shocked.

    Most of us have grown up with the stereotyped "casting couch" portrayal of Hollywood.

    Over the years, usually after some bigwig mogul has died, we hear the tales but then it's too late to confront the alleged abuser.

    Bill Cosby has been an exception to that rule. And now Harvey Weinstein.

  • New Chamber Member

    The Williston Chamber of Commerce welcomed Etheridge's U Pick Lane (Etheridge family front from left, Brad, Nancy, Todd, Frank and Shannon) to its membership last week with a ribbon cutting ceremony at its location, 2391 NE 140th Ave, Williston. Every weekend in October, the farm is open to the public for entertainment, food, farm-related fun and of course, picking your own pumpkins.

    Williston Crossings RV Resort was chosen by the Williston Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors as the September Business of the Month. Along with owner, Alan Wallace, center, several members from the Chamber board and Williston's reigning royalty were on hand to congratulate "the hidden gem of Williston."

    NC Business Council Meeting

    The Nature Coast Business Development Council will hold its regular monthly board meeting at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12 at the College of Central Florida’s Jack Wilkinson Campus, 15390 Hwy 19, Chiefland.

    Due to the membership of the NCBDC consisting of more than one member of the Levy County RESTORE Act advisory committee, this meeting will also serve as a meeting for the Levy County RESTORE Act advisory committee.

  • Fred Morris retires

    The Williston Police Department congratulates Sgt. Fred Morris on his retirement. Morris served the City of Williston for 17 years with dedication to the city and its residents. He continues to be an active member of the force as a Reserve Officer.

    The Levy County Sheriff’s Office reports the following arrests:

    • Oct. 3, Christopher Alan Chapin, 30, Bronson, grand theft. Bond $25,000.

    • Oct. 6, Marvin Eugene Cooper Jr., 50, Williston, possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell, manufacture or deliver, possession of a controlled substance w/o a prescription, and/or use, giving false ID to LEO. Bond $61,000.

    • Oct. 8, Daniel Delaney, 45, Chiefland, four counts FTA. Bond $20,000.

    • Oct. 4, Megan Desiree Desbiens, 38, Inglis, FTA. Bond $2,000.

    I believe all of us would agree that names are very interesting, beautiful, significant, descriptive, and passed down.

    Very few people name their sons Judas or their daughters Jezebel for obvious reasons.

    With respect to many persons, their name is somewhat of a description of who they are.
