  • Teams go 2-1 with district losses

    Both Williston Middle High Varsity teams (boys and girls) had overall successful last weeks, but both couldn’t secure the most important win that they needed to tie for first place in the district. The teams went 2-1, with the boys losing to Hawthorne, and the girls suffering a defeat at the hands of Newberry.

  • Fan Appreciation Night Jan. 13

    It’s Fan Appreciation Night Friday, Jan. 13 when the Williston Red Devils take on Newberry’s Panthers in Williston.

    Fans are encouraged to wear red.

    The JV boys tip off at 4:30 followed by the varsity girls at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.

  • New year brings good fortune to Red Devils

    Apparently, the new year's resolution for both WMHS varsity basketball teams was to keep winning. The girls went 2-0 last week and the boys 3-0, with both teams beating Ft. White and Hilliard at home. Both wins were important district victories for the teams, as they are both now 7-1 in that category. The girls are in second behind the undefeated in district play Newberry Panthers, while the boys are in the same position behind the Hawthorne Hornets.

    The Levy County Sheriff’s Office reports the following arrests:

    • Jan. 8, Dale John Anderson, 64, Fanning Springs, two counts BUI, refusal to submit to DUI test after license suspended, BUI. 

    • Jan. 7, Santos Juan Bautista, 26, Williston, no DL, touch or strike. Bond $12,500.

    • Jan. 4, Thomas Beal, 55, Fort Myers, burglary of  unoccupied dwelling, grand theft. Bond $40,000.

    Effective communication with our new representatives to Congress and the state legislature will be the first topic of discussion when Citizens for an Engaged Electorate meets on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m. at Williston Community Center.

  • ZTA honors Mary Gene Bailey French

    College can be such a daunting experience…living away from home for the first time, trying to figure out where you fit in, learning to adapt to such a totally different environment. For local retired teacher Mary Gene Bailey French, joining a sorority was a real life saver! And recently, she received a certificate and white violet charm, recognizing her almost-75 years of membership in Zeta Tau Alpha.

    For nearly two decades Mary Kline has been the face of the Williston Chamber of Commerce, but come this Sunday – New Year's Day – that changes as Mary slides into a well-deserved retirement with her husband, Darrell by her side.

    "I'm really ambivalent," she said her last full day of work, Dec. 22. "The closer I get to it, the more I wonder if I'll go crazy. But I am excited as a whole chapter is closing."
