  • Band director honored: Park dedicated to Johnny Henry

    A multi-use park in Williston's central area was dedicated as the Johnny T. Henry Celebration Park in a ceremony on Saturday that drew more than 200 of Henry's friends and admirers of all ages, from tots to senior citizens.

    Henry was the director of the Williston school bands for nearly three decades before his untimely death two years ago, an event that shocked and saddened the whole community.

    Councilman Steve Holcomb, who supervises Parks and Recreation for the council, was the emcee for the ceremonies. Holcomb was also Johnny Henry's brother-in-law.

    Times have changed haven't they? In this busy, hectic world we live in today it is easy to forget how things used to be. To be sure some things have changed for the better, but how about service? I'll bet many of you can remember a time when you did business with a grocer or butcher that you knew personally. Or maybe you went to the local garage for gas and oil because the owner took care of your car when it needed repair. You went to those businesses because you trusted them and they gave you reliable service.

  • From the kitchen

    If anything like mine; kitchens everywhere have had a steady stream of baking and cooking going on during this entire month. This year I am finished early with all the baking of treats that Jim likes to have around and that we give as gifts. My big table is cleared and everything put away for another year and now I am going to enjoy the remaining days leading up to fixing Christmas dinner.

    The Rotary Club of Williston conducted a poll of its members last Tuesday morning at a rescheduled General Assembly meeting. The resulting majority vote was to change the time of day the Rotary Club met from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

  • Webb, Davis to wed on Dec. 28

    Lauren Marie Webb of Micanopy and Ray Richard Davis of Brooker will be married on Dec. 28, 2007.

    The bride-to-be is the daughter of Roger S. and Patricia G. Webb. She is a recent graduate from Agnes Scott College with a B.A. degree in economics.

    The prospective bridegroom is the son of Thomas R. and Richelle A. Davis. He is a recent graduate from ITT Technical Institute with a B.S. degree in technical project management.

    The wedding will be at Ochwilla Baptist Church, Highway 21, Hawthorne, at 7:30 p.m. A reception will follow in the church Fellowship Hall.

  • Magee, Tepfenhart to wed in California

    Mr. and Mrs. Clay Woods of Morriston announce the engagement of their son, Cory A. Tepfenhart, 21, to Megan Rae Magee, 22, of Carlsbad, Calif., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Magee of Poway, Calif.

    The bride-to-be is an administrative assistant at Infoplace USA and student at Cal State San Marcos, studying to obtain her teaching degree.

  • Wild observations

    I still become amazed at how different winter is here compared to where I grew up in New Jersey. There I hoped for snow. Here I know better. I know it won't snow, so I sit on the front porch writing this, wearing a sleeve-less top.

    What can I do on these glorious days but go out and enjoy nature? Yesterday I kayaked solo for the first time. I've been kayaking in company three times. I put in at the same boat ramp I've been to twice before. I knew I could carry the kayak by myself, and that I could get in and out of it unassisted.

  • 'Pregnant Mom' delivers in speech contest

    The focus was on the family for half of the speeches recently given by 4th and 5th graders at Williston Elementary School, and those three all won! Though it proved a challenging job, it was a fun experience for judges Annette Kordgien and Naomi Petteway, who enjoyed listening to the six contestants - Mackenzie Goode, Mallory Jones, Kaylee Nicholson, Cammeron Smith, Branden Spillane and Martha Ann Wilson - who were voted as the top speakers from the earlier grade level competitions. Kordgien, postmaster at Cedar Key and a past leader of various organizations, has judged before.
