  • Williston boys team clinches second seed

    The Williston boys basketball team clinched the second seed in the district tournament with a 46-42 win over Dixie County Thursday night.

    That means a first-round bye in the tournament, which will be held at Williston.

    The Red Devils won a pair of district contests in the past week against two teams called Indians, knocking off a stubborn Chiefland team, 66-37 last Friday, then defeating a depleted Fort White squad, 53-31, Tuesday at home.

    A second seed in a six-team tournament means a first-round bye.

  • Girls defeat St. Francis

    The Williston girls are warming up for the district tournament next week at Newberry.

    The team edged Gainesville St. Francis, 64-59, last Saturday night at home.

    The Devils had a 15-point lead in the second quarter, but the visitors gradually whittled it down to the final few minutes when they poulled to within four a 60-56.

    Margaret Brown hit a couple of free throws with 1:40 left to make it 62-56, but St. Francis came back with a field goal and foul shot around a missed free throw by the Devils to make it 62-59.

  • Aftermath of Morriston home invasion

    Hello and welcome to Your Sheriff's Corner.

    Last week a person entered a Morriston couple's residence and the suspect shot the victim leaving him critical wounded.

    I have had many phone calls from home owners in the Morriston area disturbed and alarmed about this incident. I totally understand why the residents are alarmed because this is a quiet and peaceful neighborhood and usually there is little to no crime in this rural community.

  • Williston Police Reports

    The Williston Police Department has announced the following arrests:

    * Dasharee D. Berry, 39, of Highway 318, Reddick, was arrested on a Violation of Probation for fraud warrant out of Alachua County.

    * Jeremy D. Donald, 19, of Northeast 40th Avenue, Williston, was charged with felony possession of marijuana after the car in which he was riding was stopped for loud music.

    * Harold Dallas Jr., 19, was arrested for felony possession of marijuana in the same incident. A third suspect ran from the scene.

  • Get rid of Devil nickname

    I was born and raised in Williston; I graduated in 1981 and soon after I joined the United States Marine Corps. I served 23 years, retiring in 2003; during that time I visited family and friends when the opportunity arose or when unexpected sad occasions happened.

    This particular visit was because of the death of my sister, whom we all know as Diane. I mentioned this because it was the death of my sister that brought me back to Williston to raise several questions.

  • Court rules exotic animal ordinance constitutional

    A Levy County criminal court ruled in a Tuesday hearing that the county’s ordinance on keeping exotic animals does not violate Florida’s Constitution.

    The issue of the ordinance potentially being unconstitutional was brought before Circuit 8 Judge James T. Browning by Defense Attorney Moises Kaba III, who was representing Brian R. Davis, of Morriston, on a citation issued by county code enforcement with regard to class 1 exotic animals being kept on his property.

  • Appraiser concludes amendment explanations

    Levy County Property Appraiser Francis Akins recently sent the fourth of four parts of information concerning the proposed 2007 Property Tax Reform Legislation, which will become a constitutional amendment if 60 percent or more of the Florida voters approve it via the Jan. 29 ballot.

    The fourth part deals with what is called the "Non-Homestead Property 10 Percent Cap."

    The proposed constitutional amendment would make an exemption available to owners of real property who do not have a homestead exemption or an agriculture use assessment on the property, Akins said.

  • City workers vote for union

    City of Williston employees have voted by a wide margin to affiliate themselves with the AFSCME union.

    The vote was 27 for unionization, four against and 14 not voting.

    The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO, describes itself as "the nation's largest and fastest growing public service employees union."
