  • Williston Police Reports

    The Williston Police Department announced the following arrests:

    * Sadie Mae Harris, 48, of Rt. 1, Williston, was charged with misdemeanor retail theft after she was allegedly observed taking $58 worth of merchandise at Family Dollar.

    * Kenneth Earl Oswalt, 31, of Southwest Eighth Place, The Arbours, was charged with midemeanor violation of injunction.

    * Keith W. Frasier, 46, of Northeast 10th Street, was charged with vilation of probation for possession of paraphernalia on a Levy County warrant.

  • Catching up on a few things:

    PAYING FOR ACCIDENTS: A few weeks ago we had an interesting discussion in Williston about having accident victims pay for the cost of having police answer the calls. That drew a large outcry from city folks who say they already pay through taxes, and also from those who might not be at fault in the accidents.

    Last week out of the Ocala City Council meeting came a plan that addresses both of those concerns.

    Ocala is working with the company Cost Recovery to recover the costs of police response to accidents, taking into account the complaints listed above.

  • City sets parade rules

    Are you planning a parade or a celebration that will require any of the streets of Williston to be closed off or patrolled by local law enforcement?

    If so, start planning early. And make the first item on your "to-do" list getting the proper permits and agreements from the city.

    At a recent meeting, WPD Chief Dan Davis asked the city council to require a minimum 30-day notification of any event that requires street closing and special policing. The council agreed to his request.

  • CRA discusses downtown

    Williston's Community Redevelopment Agency lacked a quorum at its Monday meeting, but the attending members discussed upcoming business nonetheless.

    The CRA's Feb. 11 meeting is to be conducted as a workshop to produce an updated plan. The CRA had agreed with David Connolly, Withlacoochee Regional Planning Council Senior Planner, that the document, produced in 2002, was in need of revision, based on progress thus far and on costs of materials and services which have, of course, risen since the inception of the plan.

  • Local voters not in step with state

    Levy County's voters did not go exactly like the rest of Florida's constituents, but the votes were similar overall.

    With 100 percent of the votes counted in Levy County by 9 p.m. on Jan. 29, Hillary Clinton took 40.64 percent (2,235) of the Democrats' votes and John McCain garnered 31.44 percent (1,102) of the Republicans' votes, according to Supervisor of Elections Connie Asbell.

    Tax Aide begins at local libraries

    Free Tax Aide Preparation and E-file with AARP Tax-Aide begins Feb. 1.

    Sites will be open at libraries in Trenton (Monday 1-5 p.m.), Cross City

    (Tuesday noon-3 p.m.), Williston (Thursday noon-3 p.m.) and Chiefland

    (Friday noon-4 p.m., Saturday 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m.) throughout the tax season.

    Tax-Aide serves taxpayers of all ages with special emphasis on those age 60 and older. Guidelines for Tax-Aide are posted at area libraries.

  • Wild observations

    Mysterious mushrooms...that's what I think whenever I see their strange fruits erupting from the ground.

    I find observing mushrooms nearly as dependable as observing birds. No matter the season or location of my walks, I usually find birds and mushrooms to look at. I won't say identify, especially when referring to mushrooms, because I rarely positively name a mushroom.

    A friend of mine sent me the following information as she thought it would be of interest not only to me, but also to some of my readers. I do not know its origin, nor have I validated it as factual, but after reading it; I felt it had enough merit to share. My father believed in using foods to prevent, as well as to treat, deficiencies in the body; he did not rely on vitamins and pills of any kind for that purpose. I have always agreed with his philosophy, for the most part, and shall, therefore, leave you to research further and/or draw your own conclusions.
