  • Future of Airport Committee comes up for discussion

    It was item 8B on the city council agenda for it's Feb. 5 meeting: "Vice President Robinson re: abolishment of the Airport Committee." The notation was read on that date and then the item was tabled until the next meeting at councilman Robinson's request.

    Yet the reaction was explosive when the idea was discussed at the Feb. 19 meeting.

  • Byrd to run for County Commission

    The Levy County Commission race in District 5 heated up when Cal Byrd announced recently that he will challenge two-term incumbent Danny Stevens for the Democratic party's nomination for the seat.

    Byrd has served on the Williston City Council for nearly 25 years. He was a charter member of the Airport Committee, which was established nearly 10 years ago to oversee the growth of Williston's airport and industrial park, and he still serves in that capacity. As a councilman he oversees the utilities department and he also sits on the retirement pension board.

    First-graders set patriotic program

    The first-grade classes of Joyce Bullock Elementary will present a program of historical and patriotic music titled "America, Forever Free," Thursday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Williston High School auditorium.

    The program with the general theme of freedom, features Native American songs, early American songs, a song sung by African American slaves, as well as some beautiful patriotic selections. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy these young performers as they celebrate the freedom of our wonderful country.

  • Wild Observations

    These February days outside are full of movement, a visual dance of changes. Have you noticed the amount of dry leaves falling from live, laurel and other evergreen oaks? Buds on these trees begin the unfolding of new fresh leaves to replace the old fallen ones. The pine trees release pollen that moves through the air, resting in yellow powder on receiving surfaces. Only the turkey oak leaves, jagged-edged and brown, remain on their branches longer into spring. The movement of wind causes these dry leaves to rustle insistently.

  • Devils lose in boys regional

    It didn't take long to find out how Tuesday's basketball game was going to go.

    P.K. Yonge jumped out to an 18-point lead and held off a determined Williston team to take a 51-37 win in the Class 3A, Region 2 semifinals at Williston.

    The win ends the Devil boys basketball season at 21-8. After defeating Wildwood on Saturday P.K. Yonge moves on to play Wednesday at Lakeland in the state semifinal against Fort Myers Dunbar.

  • Bronson falls in district final

    Following Bronson's district semi-final win over Oak Hall, top seeded Hawthorne polished off fourth seeded host Lafayette Mayo for the final matchup Saturday.

    Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Hornets hadn't lost anything since their most recent meeting three weeks ago, won by Hawthorne. The Hornets won the district championship 71-61 in double overtime with the help of sensational shooting by Jimmy Johnson and a war of attrition that saw the Eagles lose the invaluable Kelby Barber with just under two minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

  • Girls lose in regional

    LAKE BUTLER - It was a dark and stormy night outside last Thursday, but the Williston girls basketball team couldn't transfer any of that lightning inside in its regional game against Union County.

    The Red Devils' season ended badly, as the team fell to the Tigers, 69-38, in the regional quarterfinals.

    The win sent Union County to P.K. Yonge Tuesday for a regional semifinal, but the Tigers' season ended also as they lost by 14 to the Blue Wave. P.K. plays at Lake Highland Prep in Orlando Friday for the right to go to the Final Four.
