  • Girls defeat P.K. Yonge

    The Williston Lady Red Devils defeated P.K. Yonge 11-3 on Tuesday night. The Lady Red Devils brought out the bats and avenged an early-season loss to the Blue Wave in a big way. They scored 11 runs on 12 hits. Simone Cannady led the way with an inside-the-park home run. Margaret Brown also joined in the hit parade with three hits, along with three runs scored; she also made some sparkling fielding plays during the game. Senior Heather Porter pitched the first five innings, striking out four P.K. batters, and Tori Stamper pitched two scoreless innings to preserve the win.

  • No charges in fair check case

    Eighth Judicial Circuit State Attorney Bill Cervone said on March 14 that his office would not prosecute Bob Levesque for check fraud in regard to an instance four months ago.

    Levesque was the president of the Levy County Fair Association when he wrote a $2,000 check on the association's account to cover a payment due to Robinson's Racing Pigs. He wrote the check on Nov. 13, 2007, according to the victims.

    Restitution was made to pig owners Randall and Sharon Ross of Fort White, Cervone said.

  • Levy County Sheriff's Reports

    Officers with the Levy County Sheriff's Office recently arrested the following people.

    * William Alan Lancaster, 24, of Chiefland was arrested March 12 for grand theft of a firearm and dealing in stolen property. Bond $20,000.

    * Jesse Bryan Balogh, 20, of Chiefland was arrested March 12 for dealing in stolen property. Bond $1,000.

    * John Andrew Flynn, 30, of Bronson was arrested March 12 for burglary of a vehicle and petit theft. Bond $3,500.

    * Debbie Hammonds Bouchard, 51, of Williston was arrested March 11 for grand theft auto. Bond $5,000.

  • Williston police reports

    The Williston Police Dept. announced the following arrests:

    Marty Eugene Days Sr., 44, of Williston Arms Drive, was charged by officer Michael Bracaglia with felony domestic battery after Days allegedly punched a female victim in the eye.

    William Joseph Schafer, 48, of Southeast 179th Place, and Andrea Lynn Phillips, 23, of the same address, were arrested at Williston Arms and charged with felony possession of drug paraphernalia after being found in a car parked at that location.

  • Lottery and school funding

    Like many Floridians, I play the lottery, usually Lotto. I don't go overboard with the amount I spend, and occasionally I win a few bucks.

    When you see a report such as the one the Florida Lottery put out last weekend, though, it makes you think.

    In an insert in many Sunday newspapers throughout the state, lottery officials published an eight-page, full-color report of how much money has been spent on education from lottery proceeds.

  • City checks for unlicensed businesses

    The city of Williston is warning all business owners in the city limits that they must have a current Business Tax Certificate.

    The Code of Ordinances Section 36-31 (a) reads:

    "There is hereby levied a local business tax in the amounts as set forth in section 36-36 hereof for the privilege of engaging in or managing any business, profession or occupation within the corporate boundaries of the city. The tax imposed hereunder shall be administered in accordance with all provision of F.S. ch. 205."

  • Julia Haile dies

    A former Levy County School Board member who was the first African American elected to county-wide office has died.

    Julia L. Haile, 82, died March 15, 2008.

    She moved from Valdosta, Ga., to Chiefland in 1957 where she taught in the Levy County Public School system until her retirement. She was elected in 1996 as a School Board member; she served two terms and was voted chairperson in her final year.

  • Bell crticizes lack of bids

    BRONSON - Levy County Commissioner Nancy Bell voted "No" in a 4-1 decision on March 18 to seek bids with a $50,000 ceiling for some specific medical equipment.

    This bid, Bell told the Chiefland Citizen, is just an obligatory action that circumvents the process, which had been established to find the lowest and best bids for goods and services.

    A unique set of circumstances led to Bell's blasting the other four county commissioners.

  • Schools start discussing possible cuts

    BRONSON - The storm clouds that were on the horizon are now here for the School Board of Levy County.

    Financial officer Robert Clemons believes that with proper precautions, Levy will be able to survive the spring state budget cut storm. The 2008-09 school year is another story.

    With additional state funding cuts estimated at more than a half million dollars, Levy is preparing to make moves that could shave a big chunk of money.

  • Williston Chamber ready to move

    The Williston Chamber of Commerce is apparently about to move.

    The City Council Tuesday night approved a six-month use of the annex building on Southwest Seventh Street by the Chamber. By that time, a decision on a new City Hall location should have been made, opening up other possibilities for the business organization.

    Justin Head, president of the Chamber, was an addition to the agenda, and told the council that the current office on South Main Street "is a little more costly than we can afford."
