The Levy County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a request from Fire Chief John Ward to apply for a matching grant to improve radio service in parts of the county where hand-held radios are failing.

A request to apply for a $561,655 grant, where the Federal Emergency Management Agency pays 90 percent and Levy County pays 10 percent, was unanimously approved at a special County Commission meeting on the evening of March 25.

Have you ever tried to find a word to describe wildflowers growing in numbers more than a few? Bees can come in hives, swarms and colonies. Cattle in herds. Fish in shoals. Geese in skeins and gaggles. And so on. In my research I discovered a few new words to describe numbers: a "sedge" of heron; a "nide" of pheasants; and my favorite-a "fling" of sandpipers.

The Williston Police Department has announced the following arrests:

* Dannette D. Parmley, 49, of Northwest 100th Street, Micanopy, was arrested on a Marion County warrant after being stopped for a tag obstruction. She was also charged with giving false information to a law enforcement officer, after Inv. Eliza D. Kolak recognized her from a picture of those who had warrants.

* Benjamin David Gilland 49, was charged with driving with a suspended license (with knowledge) after being stopped for driving with an inoperative headlight.

Helped by a series of Chiefland mistakes, the Williston Middle School Red Devils came from behind Tuesday to win their baseball division of the Suwannee Middle Athletic Conference, 8-5, over the visiting Braves.

Williston was scheduled to play in Lake Butler Thursday for the conference title.

Trailing 5-4, the Devils entered the bottom of the fifth with the top of the order coming to the plate, the part of the lineup that had been doing damage all afternoon.
