  • Chiefland Mayor Teal Pomeroy dies at 42

    The search for Chiefland Mayor Teal Pomeroy, who went diving alone on Friday afternoon, ended sadly with the recovery of his body on Sunday morning. Throughout the weekend the community prayed for a better ending for the husband and father of two young boys. 

    On Monday, the family announced plans for the funeral on Saturday, August 27, at 4 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Chiefland. There will be a visitation from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

  • Here I go again

     I miss spending lazy Fridays chatting with Winnelle Horne on the porch of the Levy County Quilt Museum. 

    She certainly tolerated my foolishness while educating me on Levy County culture. 

    One thing the late founder often said to me,”You're certainly opinionated.”

    “Um huh. You want me to leave now?”

  • Bronson man accused of having child porn

    A complaint to a federal probation officer has resulted in the arrest of a Bronson man on charges of possession of child pornography and witness tampering. 

    Levi Jermaine Griffin, 39, was arrested by the Levy County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division on Aug. 12 after Griffin’s probation officer said he had information that Griffin was in possession of images of children on his computer. The probation officer said the person who complained believed the images were pornographic.

     The Levy County Sheriff’s Office reports the following arrests:

    • Aug. 14, David Anthony Blevins, 30, Old Town, out of county warrant.

    • Aug. 9, Christopher Matthew Branson, 21, Old Town, DUI. Bond $2,500.

    • Aug. 8, Edgar Dewayne Burke, 28, Old Town, FTA. Bond $205.

    • Aug. 11, David Chilcote, 51, Williston, touch or strike. Bond $76,000.

  • MacDonald-Stewart celebrate June nuptials

     Erin MacDonald and Jason Stewart were united in marriage Saturday, June 18  at five o'clock in the afternoon at the Hockley Valley Resort in Ontario, Canada. The bride is the daughter of Lori MacDonald of Ontario, Canada and the late Eric MacDonald.

  • Hiers signs with the Fighting Owls

     Aliza Hiers has signed an athletic scholarship with Harford Community College, a D1, NJCAA school in Bel Air, Md. 

    Under Coach Will Wheeler, Harford finished 19-12 in the 2015-16 season and second in its conference. 

     After looking at several options, Hiers chose Harford as a “best fit” for her future in volleyball.

    After months of summer workouts followed by a grueling fall camp, high school football players finally get an opportunity to show off their hard work under the lights tonight against someone wearing an opposing jersey.

    The bloodmobile will be at First Baptist Church Williston on Sunday, Aug. 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Please come give the gift of life.

     

    Baseball Tryouts

    The Orlando Scorpions youth travel baseball program is holding fall tryouts for ages 9 through 12 on Tuesday Aug. 23, 6 to 8 p.m., at Diamond Sports Parks in Archer. The tryout fee is $30.
