  • Williston airport is hog wild and pig crazy

    It’s George Orwell’s Animal Farm over at the Williston Airport.

    That’s because the wild hogs have taken over–so much in fact, that  city leaders are looking for someone to pay the city for eradicating the wild swine.

    Gestation for swine is about 112-114 days, which means it’s conceivable for a sow to deliver three  litters a year with as many as 14 piglets at a time.

  • Two headed for collegiate gridiron

    David Heinkel and Damien Strange signed their college scholarships on National Signing Day last week before a large crowd of well wishers at the Williston Gym.

    Heinkel will be attending Missouri Southern State University and Strange will be attending Jacksonville University.

    Both young men thanked their parents, coaches, and teachers for all their support which helped lead to their scholarship offers.

  • Specks to speckled trout

    With off shore fishing at a lull due to restricted seasons anglers have been focusing on in shore and fresh water fishing and from specks to speckled trout have shown much success.

    Feb. 9, Edward Lee Alford, 47, Rosewood, out of county warrant.

    Feb. 6, Lloy Frances Balboni, 43, Old Town, VOP.

    Feb. 5, Jerald Lee Brodus, 38, Chiefland, FTA. Bond $2,500.

    Feb. 8, Dennis Laurel  Canada, 49, disorderly intoxication. Bond $20,000.

    Feb. 10, Lucas Kenny Chase, 27, Gainesville, DUI.

    On an early December morning, I awoke some 10,000 odd miles from my own backyard, to the unfamiliar sound of wild birds that filled the Australian sky as the sun rose on Manly Beach, a hustling coastal suburb in Sydney Australia. 

  • District Champs

    It was certainly no easy task that faced the 2012-2013 Williston Red Devil Basketball team.

     The Red Devils finished as the regular season district runner-up  with a 7-3 record, splitting games with Fort White, Bradford and Santa Fe in the District 4A regular season. Fort White, after acquiring three transfer players for this season, finished in first place and hosted the district playoffs.

    After Santa Fe downed Interlachen, and Bradford took down Keystone Heights on  Feb. 5, it was time for the district semifinals.

    A lot of  energy coupled with fierce competitive emotion took to the diamond Saturday during the WHS Baseball Booster Alumni Day–a fund-raiser for the baseball team.

    Beginning at 10 a.m. with a scrimmage game between Williston and Bronson, activities ran throughout the day.

    No score was kept during the scrimmage but Williston dominated during the game that allowed both teams to play for fun yet hone their skills.

  • Senior Night

    The Williston Red Devils boys’ basketball team hosted the North Marion Colts Feb.1 to celebrate its Senior Night before a packed house.

    Missing for this final regular season home game was senior David Heinkel, a three-year varsity player for the Red Devils who was out of town on a football visit to a college in Missouri. 

    Heinkel was a two-year starter for the Red Devils will return for the district playoffs which begin for the Red Devils Friday night.

    Jan. 31, William Michael Carryer, 18, possession of marijuana, petit theft. Bond $2,500.

    Jan. 28, Kelly Michelle Colson, two counts burglary, three counts grand theft and petit theft. Bond $165,000.

    Jan. 30, Javier Damaso, 28, Williston, DWLS, possession of controlled substance without a prescription. Bond $2,500.
