  • Residents become wary of new power plant

    Progress Energy is coming with its nuclear power plant construction and the Levy County Commission is starting to feel the impact from the public.

    In Tuesday's regular county commission meeting a request to re-zone 4 parcels of land from along US Highway 19/98 and Southeast 68th Avenue in Inglis from agricultural to C-2 which would allow a variety of retail and personal services uses sparked a discussion among citizens about the coming changes.

    Fish fry Friday

    at Holy Family

    A fish fry will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Alt. U.S. 27, Williston, on Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. The adult price is $7 and the child's price is $4. Takeouts are available. This fund-raiser helps people in the community with their financial problems.

    There are door prizes of a free ticket to the following fish fry and a drawing for an individual winner with a small gift in appreciation of attending this dinner.

  • Ten Broeck named general manager of Levy papers

    Tom Ten Broeck has been named the general manager of the Chiefland Citizen and the Cedar Key Beacon with responsibility for the Williston Pioneer Sun News.

    The announcement came last week from Gerry Mulligan, publisher of the Citrus County Chronicle and regional publisher of the Florida newspapers owned by Landmark Community Newspapers Inc.

    He replaces Dale Bowen, who is now working as ad sales manager at the Citrus County Chronicle.

    Free, reduced meal program

    Reminder to Parents about Application for Free and Reduced Meal Program

    Students will receive 2008-2009 application forms for the Free and Reduced Meal Program when school starts. They will be instructed to take these forms home to parents.

    Parents are reminded that they must complete and return the 2008-2009 application forms for free/reduced meals during the FIRST 30 DAYS of school, even if their children were enrolled in the program the previous year (the 2007-2008 school year).

  • Levy County Sheriff's Reports

    Dawn M. Bremer, 39, Northeast 61st Lane, Bronson, was charged with DUI after the sheriff's office received a call about a possible intoxicated person, according to the deputy's report. Deputy Dave Rodriguez's report says when he arrived at Tony's Chevron on North Hathaway Avenue a woman carrying a 24-pack of beer stumbled and bumped into him.

    According to the report he could smell the odor of alcohol on her and he followed her out of the store and as she drive out of the lot.

    He stopped her at Hathaway and Main streets for making an improper turn.

  • Williston Police Reports

    The Williston Police Dept. reports the following arrests:

    * Mark Richard Billings, 27, of Northeast 124th Terrace, Williston, was charged with DUI after being stopped for weaving on the road.

    * Macario Solis Herrera, 31, of Southeast 5th Terrace, Williston, was charged with disorderly intoxication and breach of peace after he was pounding on the door of a house on Northeast 1st Avenue. He could not tell the officer where he lived.

  • Couple arrested on drug charges

    A Williston area couple have been arrested on a variety of drug charges by the Levy County Drug Task Force after a months-long investigation into drug dealing.
