  • New football coach arrives in Williston

    Williston High School’s new football coach started work at the school this week.

    Derek Chipoletti, 32, comes to the school for his first head coaching job, but he has been an offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and assistant head coach in schools in the Jacksonville area since 1997.

    The former University of Central Florida linebacker was All State in high school at Orange Park, and coached at his alma mater, Forrest, Sandalwood and, for the past six years, at Fleming Island High School.

  • Travis Evans signs

    Williston High School running back Travis Evans signed a full scholarship with a brand new college football program Wednesday. He will attend Georgia State University in Atlanta. From the left are Glenn Gates, his uncle; family friend Connor McCoy; Evans; his mother, Catheese Harvey and his aunt, Rebecca Tish Williams. Evans averaged 166 yards per game rushing and scored 17 touchdowns last season. The ceremony was held in the gym at the high school with football players and many other students in attendance.

    Williston Mayor R. Gerald Hethcoat presented the February Student of the Month awards at Tuesday night's City Council meeting.

  • Uniforms for the young students

    When I was a kid, I went to a Catholic school for 12 years. In elementary school, I wore blue pants, a white shirt and a blue tie. There were no exceptions.

    Things changed in high school. I still had to wear a shirt and tie (of any color), but now I had to wear either a suit jacket or a school sweater (this was in New Jersey).

    In all 12 years, I wore dress shoes to school ... no sneakers. Of course, in those days sneakers were not a status symbol.

    Sweetheart Dance

    is Saturday

    The GFWC Williston Junior Woman’s Club has set the date for the annual Daddy’s Sweetheart Dance.

    The dance will be held Saturday, Feb. 7, from 6-8 p.m. at the Williston Woman’s Club located at 1049 N.E. 6th Blvd. The dance is open to all girls in kindergarten through 5th grade.

  • Williston Police Reports

    Arrests listed by Williston Police:

    * Aaron J. Hubert, 28, of Northeast 5th Street, Williston, was accused of domestic battery and depriving of 911 after an incident at his home.

    * Jeffery Deandre Hawkins, 25, of Northeast 11th Street, Williston, was charged with possession of cocaine and resisting without violence, and driving with license suspended or revoked, after being chased by police when he failed to stop for having an inoperative tag light. He was caught at Williston Arms.

  • Levy County Sheriff's Reports

    The Levy County Sheriff’s Office reports the following arrests:

    Robert Cherico, 48, of Northeast 109th Street, Bronson, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after he allegedly hit a motorcycle and its rider with a baseball bat. He reportedly told police he was tired of nothing being done about the boys riding on his street on motorcycles. Bond $15,000.

  • Girls pull off upset on Senior Night

    Last Thursday night at the Williston gym there was only one senior on the Red Devils varsity basketball team. Kim Dobbins had her single player ceremony and was joined by her parents, Rick and Deanna Dobbins, and Head Coach Jason Odom at center court for her senior night celebration.

    The Red Devils then took the court to face the Meadowbrook Lady Mustangs who brought with them an 18-1 season record.

    The Red Devils were first to score in a cold shooting first quarter and led the game the entire way for a 46-34 win.

  • Baseball team to sponsor golf tourney

    The Williston High School baseball team is sponsoring the first ever “Bats on Fire” golf tournament on Saturday, Jan. 24, at Williston Highlands Golf and Country Club. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. and the shotgun start is at 8.

    This is a three-man scramble, $45 per person or $135 per team, which includes lunch. Hole sponsorships are available for $75. Advance team registration and a hole sponsorship is available for $200.
