  • Red Devils win

    Maybe now the Santa Fe baseball team will join ranks with the Santa Fe boys basketball team and understand they just can't beat the Williston Red Devils, at least this year.
    The teams met twice during the regular season and the Red Devils took both games. When the district playoff rolled around, the two best teams in the district met for the championship game.  Again the Red Devils won this meeting for the championship.

  • Relay for Life nets more than $45,000

    It was 18 hours of pure emotion as hundreds of people flocked to Booster Stadium Saturday to celebrate life and the end of a full year of fund-raising designed to combat cancer.
    Williston’s Relay for Life kicked off at noon with the Survivors’ Lap. The expressions on the faces of those who walked the track ran the gamut from joy to sorrow, as many remembered those who lost the good fight.
    But all around the field was celebration, joy and reverie as teams surrounded the track in the infield with Derby Day motif campsites.

  • Special events permits may be required; hearing in June

    If you are planning to hold a big wedding at your home or hold a fishing tournament, you won't need a special events permit with clearances from the building, sheriff's office, and public safety and health departments among others.
    But if you are planning a gathering that could draw the public, impact the neighbors, traffic, public safety, the environment or have outside effects, then you might need a special events permit under an ordinance being considered by the Levy County Commission.

  • Sean Mullins is April POY nominee

    Sean Mullins, a Williston native and resident, was chosen as April’s nominee in the Pioneer of the Year Contest.
    Mullins, a Levy County Sheriff’s deputy, was selected based on a letter of recommendation that called him the “visionary responsible for the Ride to Provide fund-raiser for the Levy Association of Retarded Citizens.” The ride has averaged over $10,000 in proceeds annually for the last five years.

  • City picks Waste Pro

    Come June 1 Williston residents and businesses will have a new waste provider.
    During an almost four-hour meeting Tuesday night, the city council chose Waste Pro over four other bidders, including current provider WCA.
    Cost and services offered were the determining factors in the selection, with Councilor Jason Cason getting to the point quickly–the two were cost comparable but Waste Pro offered an extra man on the truck compared to WCA’s automated pickup.

  • Touching Moment

    Just east of Williston on Hwy. 27A, some of the finest horseflesh in the nation comes every winter to showcase talent, lineage and beauty in the annual Horse Shows in the Sun (HITS) competition.
    This year spectactors not only got a sampling of all HITS promises, they also witnessed a bit of shock and awe as a Williston Thoroughbred out-performed, out-shined and out-classed dozens of warmblood competitors to take first place in the Jumper 2 Circuit.

  • 21 arrested in Inglis, Williston drug raids

    In two days the Levy County Sheriff's Drug Task Force, the Inglis Police Department and the Citrus County Sheriff's Department swooped in on residences in Inglis and Williston arresting 21 people on a variety of drug charges.
    The raid at noon Thursday in Inglis wrapped up a two and a half year investigation, while the Williston raid on Friday came in an area where other arrests have been made.

  • Billy Hinote seeks District 2 seat on school board

    Billy Hinote, candidate for Levy County School Board District 2, issued this letter announcing his candidacy:
    “My name is Billy Hinote and I am a candidate for Levy County School Board District 2 and would like to let you know a few things about me.
    “I have resided in Levy County for 42 years. I graduated from Chiefland High School in 1978. Then I went to the IBEW Local 349 Electrical Trade School in Miami.

  • Williston custodian arrested

    A Williston Elementary School custodian was arrested Thursday after a school resource deputy discovered firearms in his vehicle.

    Dennis W. Solowski, was arrested after Deputy Grant Sandlin, acting on a tip, found an AR-15 style rifle and a 30-30 lever action rifle in the trunk. In addition to the rifles, a semi-automatic handgun was found under the front seat of the vehicle.

    The Levy County School Board requires all employees to review and sign policy prior to employment. Levy County School Board has a "ZERO" tolerance for weapons on school campuses.

  • Marissa DeHaven seeks School Board post, District 2

    Marissa DeHaven has announced her intent to run for the Levy County School Board, District 2 position.
    In her announcement, she wrote:
    “My name is Marissa (Haldeman) DeHaven and I would like to take this opportunity to announce my candidacy for Levy County School Board, District 2.  I am a life-long resident of Levy County.  I reside in Cedar Key with my husband, Mark, and our four children; Micah, 5, and Maya, Max and Marina, our 2-year- old triplets.
