  • Holloway elected

    About one hour after the Williston city election Tuesday, the canvassing board presented its findings to the council for its certification.

    County Commissioner Danny Stevens, representing the board (which also included city manager Jim Coleman, city clerk Barbara Henson and Williston Police Department Chief Dan Davis) announced that the City Council seat in Group E had been won by Brooks Holloway, 138-58, over Lindsey Hager.

    Mike Shoemaker won the group D seat unopposed, and R. Gerald Hethcoat will serve another term as mayor.

  • Holloway wins

    Brooks Holloway was elected to the Williston City Council Tuesday by a 138-58 margin over Lindsey Hager.

    A referendum to allow tax breaks for new businesses was approved, 111-79, but city residents narrowly voted down a proposal to extend the terms of mayor and council members to three years by a margin of 99-95.

    More details will be posted late Wednesday or Thursday.

  • Will you marry me? gets things started at concert

    The cats and dogs of Levy County got a big boost Saturday as country chart-topper Chris Cagle headlined the Bark-N-Purr Benefit in Bronson. The event, a fund-raiser for the Humane Society of Levy County's planned spay, neuter and adoption facility, attracted more than 2,700 visitors, according to organizers.

    Cagle rocked the soccer field at Bronson Youth League as his stamping, chanting fans sang along to such hits as "What Kinda Gone" and "My Love Goes On and On and On" as well as a sleeper from the new album, "Change Me."

  • Library book sale to be held Saturday

    The Friends of the Williston Public Library will hold the March First Saturday Book Fair, March 1 at the Williston City Hall Community Center.

    The hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and, as always the best buys are for the early birds.

    The Book Fair is a major source of donations for "Friends", because the books themselves are donated, as are the donations that people give to take the books home. Suggested donations amounts will be displayed in the center during the fair.

    In addition to choosing between Lindsey Hager and Brooks Holloway for City Council seat E in the March 4 election, citizens will vote on two referenda.

  • Williams to run for state representative

    Mike Williams, a long-time business owner from Madison, filed with the Florida Elections Commission to become the next State Representative from District 10. Williams has owned retail businesses in Madison and Thomasville, Ga., since 1979 and is involved in many business and community organizations.

  • Country star to sing Saturday in Bronson

    Weather Report for Saturday, Feb. 23: Snow is expected at the Bronson Youth League Park, 220 Picnic St., Bronson. That's right, SNOW!

    Among the many fun and entertaining attractions at the Bark-N-Purr Charity Concert and BBQ Cook-Off will be a kids snow slide provided by the Gainesville Ice Company. What an experience for children who have never seen the real thing!

  • Future of Airport Committee comes up for discussion

    It was item 8B on the city council agenda for it's Feb. 5 meeting: "Vice President Robinson re: abolishment of the Airport Committee." The notation was read on that date and then the item was tabled until the next meeting at councilman Robinson's request.

    Yet the reaction was explosive when the idea was discussed at the Feb. 19 meeting.

  • Byrd to run for County Commission

    The Levy County Commission race in District 5 heated up when Cal Byrd announced recently that he will challenge two-term incumbent Danny Stevens for the Democratic party's nomination for the seat.

    Byrd has served on the Williston City Council for nearly 25 years. He was a charter member of the Airport Committee, which was established nearly 10 years ago to oversee the growth of Williston's airport and industrial park, and he still serves in that capacity. As a councilman he oversees the utilities department and he also sits on the retirement pension board.
