  • Manager search criteria set

    Williston's City Council held a special meeting on Tuesday evening to determine how to go about selecting a new city manager to replace Jim Coleman, who was fired last week on a 4-1 vote.

    The panel's initial task was to confirm the appointment of Mark Schiefer, currently the city's finance director, as interim city manager. Schiefer has indicated that he is not interested in taking on the position on a permanent basis.

  • Crowds gather for rodeo

    Saturday at the Williston Horseman's Park there was a full night of entertainment and the sport of rodeo. It was the 14th annual Johnny Hodge Memorial High School Rodeo.

    One big hit and laugh of the night was the Donkey Derby. Sheriff Johnny Smith, County Commissioners Tony Parker and Danny Stevens, Bronson City Councilman Berlon Weeks and Rodeo Chairman Duke Reid were the five men jockeys

    Leanne Carnes was the sole woman donkey rider, becoming a last minute substitute for husband Larry Carnes who is a candidate for president of the Williston Horseman's Association.

  • Parent night set for 8th graders

    Williston High School will hold a Parent Night on Thursday, May 1, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Williston High School for all Williston Middle School 8th grade parents/students to present information and answer questions you may have about your child's entrance into the 9th grade for next school year.

    Eighth grade students will bring home information on April 30 for the pre-registration process that should aid you in making important decisions about your child's future.

  • Drug trade takes a hit

    The drug trade in Levy County and surrounding areas took a big hit recently with the announcement last week of the arrest of more than 70 people in a joint Levy-Dixie County effort.

  • Coleman fired as city manager

    About 15 minutes after Tuesday's City Council meeting started, City Manager Jim Coleman picked up his notebook and his dark glasses and walked out of the community center.

    He had just been fired by the Williston council.

    Later in the meeting finance director Mark Schiefer was named interim city manager. Final terms of his new position will be discussed at a special meeting and workshop next Tuesday, April 29, at 7 p.m. The council will also discuss how they want to proceed to fill the permanent position.

  • Hastings to run for superintendent

    A face familiar to former students in all parts of Levy County is entering the race for school superintendent.

    Robert Hastings, who retired as Chiefland High principal nearly two years ago, said last Thursday that he would enter the race.

    While attending the Williston baseball game, he was asked if "rumblings of a candidacy" were true. "There are no rumblings," he said with a smile. "I'm running."

  • Stearns to be in Williston

    U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala) will hold one town meeting in Williston and three in Ocala on Saturday, April 12. So far Stearns has held over 500 town meetings across North Central Florida. "I look forward to meeting with the citizens of the Sixth District to discuss the important issues," said Stearns.

    The Williston meeting will be from 9 to 10 a.m. at the library. 10 S.E. First Ave.

  • Subdivisions get county approval

    Three residential subdivisions and variances to allow them met with unanimous approval from the Levy County Board of County Commissioners on April 8.

    Angelina Farms, a 70-acre site outside the Williston Municipal Service District (MSD), was approved. It will be seven 10-acre residential lots.

    Harper's Subdivision, a 40-acre site to the east of Chiefland near Levy County Road 134 and CR 320 East, was approved.

    It will include four residential lots - ranging in size from 8.8-acres to 9.7-acres.

  • Council welcomes new members

    The Williston City Council welcomed two new members Tuesday night and said goodbye to a pair of long-time associates.

    Brooks Holloway and Michael Shoemaker were sworn in by Judge Joseph Smith, as was Mayor Gerald Hethcoat, who was re-elected without opposition.

    Shoemaker also won without having to face an opponent, but Holloway defeated Lindsey Hager in the March election.

  • Are your numbers showing?

    Williston officials want people to know that there is a city ordinance which requires all buildings to have numbers "plainly legible and visible from the street or road fronting the property, whether or not mail is delivered to such building or property."
