  • Sheriff will retire Dec. 31; McCallum will take office early

     Levy County Sheriff Johnny Smith has asked that he be allowed to retire early on Dec. 31 and, in a letter to Gov. Rick Scott, asked that his successor, Sheriff-elect Bobby McCallum to permitted take office a week early.
    Smith said on Nov. 28 that he has filed the paperwork asking to retire at the end of the year.
    The two men, once bitter rivals for the office, have been meeting this week to ensure a smooth transition. "A lot has changed in the last few years," Smith said.

  • Stinky problem

    A group of residents who live near a horse manure/composting operation in the Morriston-Montbrook area say it is making their lives miserable with the foul odor and fly problems, poses an environmental risk and affects their property values.

  • City to negotiate with Lippmann

    Scott Lippmann, a former city manager  in Archer and a Williston resident, was chosen unanimously Tuesday night as the potential city manager for Williston.
    The position has been vacant since July and has been most recently filled by Dr. Oel Wingo, also an contender for the job.
    The initial list of applicants numbered 42 and was pared down to 11 by consultant Mark Durbin of the Range Riders.

  • Donations needed

    AMVETS Post 444 Ladies Auxiliary is asking for donations to help the group throw a party for the residents of Wiliston Arms.
    The group has stepped forward to assist with toys and gifts since there is no Levy County Toys for Tots this year.
    “Any donation would be appreciated,” said member Lisa Kendrick. “Items like new toys, books, household products like dish soap,  paper towels, etc. are needed.”
    Donations should be made prior to Dec. 8 at the post on Hwy. 27A N.

    The Friends of the Williston Library will host its Annual Open House Saturday, Dec. 1 from 4-6 p.m.
    Thre will be light snacks, holiday baskets to bid on, door prizes and a raffle for a Sonic DVD portable player and carrying case.

  • BOCC hears proposed Williston roads funding

    The Florida Department of Transportation is preparing its wish list of projects in its five year plan, and Levy County will have several projects in it — including construction of a new taxiway for a runway at Williston Municipal Airport for $250,000 in fiscal year 2018,
    Jordan Green, Florida Department of Transportation District 2 rural area transportation development engineer, presented the district’s five-year transportation plan to the Levy County Commission at its regular meeting on Nov. 20.

  • No city manager yet

    The interviews have been complete for two weeks now, but the Williston City Council is not rushing to hire a new city manager.
    Only two agenda items were on last week’s pre-Thanksgiving meeting and one was the city manager selection process.
    Council has contracted with Hunter Investigations to conduct background checks on the applicants.
    Francis Hunter, the investigator presented the council with summaries from his findings prior to the Nov. 20 meeting, but that wasn’t enough for several councilmen.
