Williston's election for City Council will be held on Tuesday, March 3. Voting will be held at the Community Center in the City Hall complex from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The votes will be counted and certified after the polls close.

Three council seats were to be contested this year, but in two cases the incumbents, Steve Holcomb and Marc Nussel, were not challenged and thereby are automatically re-elected.

Thus, the only seat being contended is that currently held by Debra French Jones; her opponent is Jerry Robinson.

An Archer woman has died as the result of an accident on State Road 121 Tuesday south of Williston.

According to the FHP report, Diane W. McGee, 50, was traveling north on 121 in a 1989 Chevrolet when a Mack truck driven by Leonard H. Burkhartsmeier, 67, of Ocala, attempted to pass her in a legal passing zone. But McGee apparently went to make a left turn and cut in front of the truck, initiating the collision.

McGee was airlifted to Shands, where she died on Wednesday afternoon.

Williston’s CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency) is encouraging downtown businesses to spruce up with the help of façade improvement grants, which will total $10,000 for this year alone.

The thrust of the effort is to restore the historic feel of downtown Williston by returning core buildings to their original appearance.

Grants are available up to $5,000 for a single façade. Grants for lesser amounts may be awarded. 

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson’s meeting with tri-county elected officials was a case of good news-bad news.

The good news is the stimulus bill passed.

The bad news is not everyone will be satisfied.

Nelson met with elected officials from Dixie, Gilchrist and Levy County at the Gilchrist County Courthouse in Trenton Tuesday afternoon as part of a briefing tour. Nelson had visited Polk County earlier in the day and had later meetings in Live Oak and Monticello.
