  • Sheriff's Corner

    Hello and welcome to Your Sheriff's Corner. I would like to focus this week on a topic that we all encounter during our daily driving experiences, emergency vehicles. It is important that we are all educated on the importance of yielding to emergency vehicles. It is also imperative that we are aware of the laws surrounding emergency vehicles.

  • Levy County Sheriff's Reports

    The following people were arrested by the Levy County Sheriff's Office. All people in the United States are presumed innocent of crimes until they are proved guilty in a court of law.

    * Darrel Petrykowski, 19, of Bronson was arrested Feb. 23 for three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm and one count of carrying a concealed weapon. Bond $37,500.

    * Timothy Ronald Wetherington, 19, of Chiefland was arrested Feb. 29 for aggravated battery. Bond $15,000.

  • Williston man killed as roof falls

    A Williston man was killed Sunday when the roof of a mobile home collapsed on him.

    Espiridion "Pete" Zamora, 78, was working with relatives on dismantling an old mobile home in an area of northwest Marion County.

    He was outside while a pair of family members were inside. The house collapsed while the two men were working inside.

    They were able to escape, but the roof came apart on Zamora, who was killed.

    Marion County rescue officials reached the scene quickly but could not revive the victim. A sheriff's spokesman said the death was ruled accidental.

  • Williston Police reports

    The Williston Police Department reports the following arrests:

    * James Edward O'Dell, 19, of Northeast 100th Lane, Archer, was charged with stealing two copper ring lugs, each valued at $2.98, from a local auto parts store.

    * Todd Brandon Norris, 24, of Trenton, was arrested on a warrant for violation of probation, driving while license suspended or revoked, out of Gilchrist County.

  • Williston Police reports

    The Williston Police Department announced the following arrests:

    * Benjamin Joseph Lonic, Jr., 48, of Trenton, was arrested for disorderly intoxication and resisting without violence after an incident in the McDonald's parking lot. Officer Michael Bracaglia arrested him after he ignored orders from the officer and fellow officer Todd Abare to stand still, and according to the officers then reached into his truck bed and picked up an axe.

  • Great Danes found tied to fence

    Three Great Danes were found recently tied to a fence at the Williston Animal Clinic.

    If anyone knows who owns these dogs, they are asked to call officers Wayne Carson or Jackson Williams at the Williston Police Department at 528-4991.

    There were two black dogs and one brown one. One of the black dogs has already found a new home.

  • Sheriff's Corner

    Due to the economy slowing down the Federal Reserve System has met and made two significant rate cuts: three-quarters of percentage point at an emergency meeting followed by a half a point eight days later in 2008. The Chairman of the Federal Reserve System, Ben Bernanke and Treasure Secretary, Henry Paulson is predicting the U.S. will avoid a recession. With the real estate market at a slow down I want to talk about real estate fraud schemes.

  • Sheriff's Corner

    This program provides the marine community with the same benefits and protection that neighborhood watch does in other areas. The emphasis is on prevention and deterrence by practicing simple common sense precautions which reduces thefts, vandalism and other criminal activities. This is accomplished by:

    * Educating boat owners and the marine community to carry out simple crime prevention measures.

    * Encouraging all waterway users to develop a community spirit and report suspicious incidents.

  • Levy County Sheriff's Reports

    The following people were arrested recently by the Levy County Sheriff's Office on the charges listed below.

    * Keith Frasier, 46, of Williston was arrested Feb. 4 for sale of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school and possession of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school. Bond $35,000.

    * Victoria Lynne Lestertees, 30, of Trenton was arrested Feb. 4 for obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and violation of probation. No bond.

    * Jennifer Mae Mason, 19, of Miami was arrested Feb. 5 for vehicle theft and larceny. Bond $10,000.

  • Home invasion suspects sought

    Three male suspects forcibly entered a residence on Northeast 35th Street in Williston, and committed the offenses of home invasion, attempted robbery and aggravated battery on Feb. 11, said Lt. Evan Sullivan of the Levy County Sheriff's Office.

    At 11:45 p.m., three suspects forcibly entered a residence at the Mack Apartments. There were three adult victims and four juveniles ranging from 3 months to 8 years old inside the residence.
