  • Johnson named outstanding social studies teacher

    Anthony Johnson was recognized as one of Florida’s Outstanding Social Studies Teachers of the Year for the 2009-2010 school year.

    Johnson is the recipient of the “Dr. Theron Trimble Florida Social Studies Teacher of the Year Award” -Elementary level for 2009.

    This award is sponsored by the Florida Council for the Social Studies, a professional organization of Social Studies educators striving to maintain and enhance the importance of Social Studies in Florida education.

  • Middle school principal: We’re going to take care of your children

    It has come as no surprise that Pam Asbell chose her career path in education.

    “I was a great student,” said Asbell, new principal at Williston Middle School. “Iee^loved school. Iee^love learning. This is not a surprising end.”

    From those early years both attending, and playing school with friends, Asbell found role models in teachers and worked her way up the educational ladder by starting out as a teacher’s aide.

  • Open house set at JBE

    Joyce Bullock Elementary will host an open house Monday, Aug. 31.

    Times will be as follows: kindergarten parents, please report to your child’s classroom at 5:30; 1st grade parents please report to your students classroom at 6:15, and 2nd grade parents to classrooms at 7.

    Williston High School will hold its open house on Thursday, Aug. 20 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

    Student schedules will be distributed at this time, along with a general supply list for all classes. Additional supply lists will be provided to students by teachers in each course during the first week of school.

    To register your child for classes, please see Ms. Tindale at WHS to pick up an enrollment package as soon as possible. The school is currently open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and you may call at 528-3542.

  • Board, union clash over pay for experienced teachers

    Levy County Education Association President Cindy Roach says a recent change to school board policy, designed to save the district money, could end up costing more than it saves.

    In Tuesday’s meeting of the Levy County School Board, the board held a public hearing on three proposed changes to board policy. The first, pertaining to a plan to return to weighted GPAs in order to more fairly determine valedictorians and salutatorians, passed with minimal comment.

  • Bad news day for school board

    The new school year is set to begin, and the School Board of Levy County finds itself facing some fearsome challenges. Administrators are trying to maintain a disciplined, yet nurturing, learning environment, while dealing with looming budget cuts, the possibility of severe weather, and the ever-growing possibility of an outbreak of H1N1 — Swine Flu — virus.

    Jeff Edison, director of administration, recounted his recent meeting with the State Health Board on the flu issue, and what steps will be taken to avoid any outbreaks of the illness.

  • School Reunions

    WHS 1980-1989

    Williston High School, Classes 1980-1989 will hold a reunion June 27 from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m. at Williston Crossings Resort, 410 NE 5th St., Williston.

    The class of 1989 will be honored as it commemorates its 20th reunion.

    The cost is $45 per person and a cash bar will be available. Only 300 tickets are available and must be purchased in advance. Attire is dressy/casual.
