  • Engineers inform, amaze WES student 'builders'

    Aren't volunteers great?

Thanks to the outreach program sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers, employees from three engineering firms out of Gainesville recently showed up at Williston Elementary to share about what they do for a living. Ryan Harvey (Crom Corporation), Tiffany Davies (Wilson-Miller, Inc.), Rachel Conn and Matt O'Brien (Jones-Edmunds) made PowerPoint presentations in the school media center to members of the Enhanced Learning Program (ELP), the school's program for gifted students.

  • WES recyclers reap rewards

More than 26,000 cans won't be filling up Levy County's landfill this fall, thanks to Williston Elementary School student Kanyon Arban and a handful of other environmentally conscious students.

Kanyon, a fourth-grader in Teri Dixon's class, garnered the top prize as the top recycler for the fall with more than 10,000 cans. The recycling project, sponsored by the WES Student Council, will fund the purchase of aluminum picnic tables for the school.

"Wholesome" and "sensation" were the two winning words for Molly, who had competed all three years at WES and tied for first last year as a fourth grader.

  • 'Pregnant Mom' delivers in speech contest

The focus was on the family for half of the speeches recently given by 4th and 5th graders at Williston Elementary School, and those three all won! Though it proved a challenging job, it was a fun experience for judges Annette Kordgien and Naomi Petteway, who enjoyed listening to the six contestants - Mackenzie Goode, Mallory Jones, Kaylee Nicholson, Cammeron Smith, Branden Spillane and Martha Ann Wilson - who were voted as the top speakers from the earlier grade level competitions. Kordgien, postmaster at Cedar Key and a past leader of various organizations, has judged before.
