  • Stuff the Bus on Aug.30

    Folks are always reminded to "watch out" for school buses when the school year first begins. However, officials with the Levy County Schools Foundation hope you will keep an "eye out" for the big yellow buses for another important reason.

    A Foundation project called "Stuff the Bus" is under way throughout the county. On Saturday, Aug. 30, school buses will be parked at the following locations for residents to stuff the vehicles with school supplies from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

    Williston: Hitchcock's Foodway, U.S Hwy 27

    Bronson: Buy N Save Grocery, Alt. U.S. Hwy 27

  • Open House planned

    Monday, Aug. 18 will be the first day for students at Williston High School. The school day begins at 9:05 a.m. with the first bell ringing at 9 a.m. The school day will end at 3:17 p.m. Students will have homeroom every day this year. Our "zero" period will run from 8:10 a.m. to 9 a.m.

  • Teen Driving Improvement Program starts

    The Teen Driving Improvement Program, put on by the Sheriff's Office, has started in the area. Students wear goggles to simulate drunk driving and try to guide a golf cart through a maze of cones. At left, sophomore Jessica White takes her turn. More classes are scheduled.   • Amber Bradley graduates

    On June 6 in the Williston High school media center, a long awaited goal was reached.

    Amber Bradley, who suffered extensive injuries in a vehicle crash in 2006 which killed two other students, participated in commencement ceremony with her class in 2007, but was unable to receive her diploma at that time due to unfinished credits.

    She has now finished her senior credits with the help of the hospital/homebound program offered by Levy County Schools.

  • School retirees honored

    Seven retiring school employees were honored by the Levy County Education Association last week, and two scholarships were presented, at a gathering held at First United Methodist Church in Williston.

    In addition, Andy Ford, president of the Florida Education Association from Tallahassee, spoke to the audience.

  • Prepaid scholarship reassigned to WHS grad

    A Williston High School senior is receiving a prepaid tuition scholarship from a local woman who had intended to provide the education to her late granddaughter. Samantha Lewis will attend the University of Florida and study business, advertising and communications.

    Doris Young, who has had a stroke and is confined to a wheelchair, had purchased Florida pre-paid college educations for her grandchildren. However, one of those children, Sarah E. Adams, died in Pembroke Pines.

  • Fourth graders start reading project

    The Levy County Schools Foundation announces the start of the Black Stallion Literacy Project for all Levy District fourth graders for the second year. "This literacy program motivates children to discover the joys of reading and wonders of learning through the magic of live horses and a Black Stallion book by Walter Farley", says Dara Bergdoll, Black Stallion Chairman. 2007 funding for this program was provided by Perkins Financial Group, Inc. and Heath Davis Company, Inc. and this year's program is being sponsored again by Perkins Financial Group, Inc., along with The Barfield Group.

  • Students of the Month honored

    Williston Mayor R. Gerald Hethcoat presented Student of the Month awards to four youngsters at Tuesday night's council meeting. Each school is represented by one child, nominated by the administration and faculty at the school.

    Each plaque contains the text of the nomination letter submitted by the school.

    Kami Dawn McCormick, daughter of Lawrence and Kellie McCormick, is a first-grader at Joyce Bullock Elementary School, which she represents as May's student of the month.

  • Local girl earns trip to D.C.

    Each year Clay Electric selects four high school juniors to enjoy an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. during the nation's Youth Week in June. Arielle Claude of Williston High School was selected as a winner in this year's Youth Tour to Washington Contest and will spend a week in Washington D.C. June 14-19.

    The three other winners who will join Claude are Lauren Moore of Fleming Island High School, Drew Burgett of Santa Fe High School and Clint Williams of Union County High School.
