  • Relay for Life Valentine Dinner

    The Relay for Life team at the First United Methodist Church will host a Valentine Dinner on Feb. 14.

    This local night out for you and your Valentine provides a complete Prime Rib (dessert and beverage included) dinner and shows your support for a worthy cause. Tickets are $20 per person. Call the church office 528-3636 to make your holiday reservations.

  • I'll start my column with some lines from Mary Oliver. "The violets, along the river, are opening their blue faces, like small dark lanterns.

    The green mosses, being so many, are as good as brawny. How important it is to walk along, not in haste but slowly, looking at everything and calling out. To pay attention, this is our endless and proper work."

    I agree with Mary Oliver. "To pay attention," in particular to nature, is a proper work. In the first week of February here's what I paid attention to.

  • Wooden Rose Sale at Bronson church

    The Bronson Church of God Youth Group will hold a wooden rose sale Feb. 9 at Crayola Moments in Williston from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Feb. 10 and 13 at the church before and after services. All proceeds will help the youth go to Camp Wimauma this summer. Prices for roses are one for $1 and 12 roses for $10.

    There will also be the Soup Bowl Sunday, Feb. 17, after the service. All proceeds will go to the YWEA World Mission. Cost is $2.50 a bowl or $1 a cup.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Charles Michael Mirabella and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Walter Kimball announce the engagement of their daughter, Lauren Renee Kimball to Adam Edwards Whitehurst of Williston, son of Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Whitehurst, III of Williston, and Mr. and Mrs. George Miller, Jr. of Uvalda, Ga.

    Lauren has a B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Florida and is currently working toward a Masters in Literacy. Adam has a B.S. in Food and Resource Economics from the University of Florida, and is employed by Whitehurst Cattle Company.

  • Tax Aide begins at local libraries

    Free Tax Aide Preparation and E-file with AARP Tax-Aide begins Feb. 1.

    Sites will be open at libraries in Trenton (Monday 1-5 p.m.), Cross City

    (Tuesday noon-3 p.m.), Williston (Thursday noon-3 p.m.) and Chiefland

    (Friday noon-4 p.m., Saturday 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m.) throughout the tax season.

    Tax-Aide serves taxpayers of all ages with special emphasis on those age 60 and older. Guidelines for Tax-Aide are posted at area libraries.

    Visit or call your library for an appointment.

  • Mysterious mushrooms...that's what I think whenever I see their strange fruits erupting from the ground.

    I find observing mushrooms nearly as dependable as observing birds. No matter the season or location of my walks, I usually find birds and mushrooms to look at. I won't say identify, especially when referring to mushrooms, because I rarely positively name a mushroom.

  • Pre-school Storytime

    These programs use books and music to present the young children with the concept that books, reading, and libraries are fun and enjoyed at all ages.

    The programs last 30 minutes.
