  • Have you ever tried to find a word to describe wildflowers growing in numbers more than a few? Bees can come in hives, swarms and colonies. Cattle in herds. Fish in shoals. Geese in skeins and gaggles. And so on. In my research I discovered a few new words to describe numbers: a "sedge" of heron; a "nide" of pheasants; and my favorite-a "fling" of sandpipers.

  • Unity Family Day

    Unity Family Community Center, Inc., will hold its Annual Family Day for the entire family and community, a day for families to come and learn prevention strategies and abstinence education for HIV/AIDS, substance prevention and crime prevention.

    There will be games, activities and food for the whole family. The event will be Saturday, March 22, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Unity Temple of Deliverance Outreach Center, 2351 N.E. 200th Ave., Williston.

  • Church of God celebration

    The Williston Church of God choir will be presenting a musical program "An Easter Celebration." Through testimonies, Scripture and an arrangement of contemporary and Southern Gospel songs, you'll experience the entire Easter story and beyond. This celebration will take place on Saturday evening, March 22, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday morning, March 23, at 10:30 a.m.

  • Norm D. Fugate recently obtained re-certification as a Board Certified City, County and Local Government Law Attorney.

    Board certification recognizes attorneys' special knowledge, skills and proficiency in various areas of law and professionalism and ethics in practice.

    Fugate is one of 178 Florida lawyers whom The Florida Bar has certified as specialists in this particular area of law. Fugate is the only board certified attorney in Levy County. Fugate is also board certified in the area of Real Estate Law.

  • It's a rainy day - threats of severe thunderstorms and tornados in some areas. What's a nature observer to do but stay inside and remember wild things seen in the last few weeks.

  • On Friday, March 16, 793 copies of Levy County: Voices From the Past arrived in Levy County. Because the shippers required a dock, the books were delivered to the dock of the Levy County School Board. They were immediately taken to an air-conditioned place for storage in Morriston.

  • Relay barbecue

    The city of Williston is selling tickets for a barbecued pork sandwich with chips for $5 or barbecued pork sandwich dinner with beans and slaw or potato salad for $8. You can purchase your tickets at the City Hall.

    All proceeds will go to the city's Relay for life Team to benefit the American Cancer Society. Please come out and help support a worthy cause.

    The barbecue will be Saturday, March 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the City Hall.

  • Friends of the Williston Public Library is pleased to announce that Al Black, an original Florida Highwayman, will appear at the library Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m.

    He will bring slides and some of his own paintings and talk about the early days of the Florida Highwaymen, a unique group of painters.

    At the program in January with Gary Newton, from The Humanities Council, Al Black's paintings were brought spontaneously by those who came to the program.

    Many local people have some of Mr. Black's artwork that they kindly shared with the rest of us in attendance.

  • The Rotary Club of Williston is hosting its 3rd Annual Easter Egg Hunt. The free Easter Egg Hunt has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 15 at the Johnny T. Henry Celebration Park on Northwest Fourth Street one block north of Noble Avenue and near the Williston Health Care Center.
