We had been open for business for less than a week, hardly prepared for Nov. 19, when Kathleen, a financially strapped, lovely young mother of two young children, walked through our door with an emaciated, gaunt dog and a box full of faint whimpering noises. Three weeks ago, Kathleen started caring for a stray dog hanging around the house which now had eight puppies barely clinging to life due to malnutrition, dehydration, fleas, worms and ticks among other problems.
